Inc., Dabur International Ltd. and Dabur USA Inc., and Namaste Laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys for Mitchell claim that her uterine cancer was \u201cdirectly and proximately caused by her regular and prolonged exposure to phthalates and other endocrine disrupting chemicals found in Defendants\u2019 hair care products,\u201d CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/24\/health\/hair-straightening-products-lawsuit\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>. Mitchell was diagnosed with uterine cancer and underwent a full hysterectomy in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dreams of becoming a mother were gone,\u201d she said, according to CNN. \u201cAs most young African-American girls, chemical relaxers, chemical straighteners were introduced to us at a young age. Society has made it a norm to look a certain way, in order to feel a certain way \u2014 and I am the first voice of many voices to come that will stand, stand up to these companies, and say, \u2018No more.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/16409-uterine-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, uterine cancer includes endometrial cancer (more common) and uterine sarcoma, which cause bleeding between periods or after menopause and often leads to a hysterectomy treatment to remove the uterus.<\/p>\n<p>Zimmermann told CNN that the lawsuit could be a \u201cwatershed moment\u201d for women who have used such products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMillions of little girls have this put on their head at 7, 8, 9 years old, sometimes twice a month or every other month,\u201d Zimmerman said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/nexstar-media-wire\/nationworld\/loreal-4-other-companies-accused-in-lawsuit-alleging-chemical-hair-straighteners-can-cause-uterine-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KTLA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell\u2019s lawsuit comes days after the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/hair-straightening-chemicals-associated-higher-uterine-cancer-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> that showed women using chemical hair straightening products had a higher risk for uterine cancer than women who did not report using these products.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the study said they tracked 33,497 U.S. women ages 35-74 for approximately 11 years to identify risk factors for breast cancer and other health conditions. During that time, 378 uterine cancer cases were diagnosed, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe estimated that 1.64% of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70; but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05%,\u201d Alexandra White, Ph.D., head of the NIEHS Environment and Cancer Epidemiology group and lead author on the new study, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/hair-straightening-chemicals-associated-higher-uterine-cancer-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a>. \u201cThis doubling rate is concerning. However, it is important to put this information into context \u2013 uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crump <a href=\"https:\/\/bencrump.com\/press\/attorney-ben-crump-files-lawsuit-on-behalf-of-user-of-chemical-hair-straightening-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> the products \u201cdangerous,\u201d and said the companies have \u201caggressively misled black women to increase their profits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that Mitchell\u2019s case would likely lead to \u201ccountless\u201d others.<\/p>\n<p>The companies named in the lawsuit have not responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lawyers on behalf of a Missouri woman filed a federal lawsuit Friday in Chicago against cosmetic manufacturers L\u2019Oreal and four other companies for allegedly contributing to an increased risk of uterine cancer using chemical hair straightening products.
