Stancak died at the age of 87 in his home in 2016, and it is still unclear how he amassed his fortune. He had six siblings, but they are all deceased and had no children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Rudy Quinn is the president of Linking Assets Inc., which discovers unclaimed funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNo one knows what this guy did and what led him to diversify his wealth in the way that he did \u2026 And we didn\u2019t know his property would balloon to $11 million,\u201d Quinn <a href=\"https:\/\/blockclubchicago.org\/2022\/10\/24\/a-chicago-man-quietly-left-behind-11-million-the-largest-unclaimed-estate-in-american-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe had to get creative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">His relatives were found over the course of years, and a lot of them did not live in the United States. None of them realized that he was a multi-millionaire, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/amp\/chicago\/news\/the-countrys-largest-return-of-unclaimed-property-is-in-illinois-valued-at-11m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a>. Neighbors said they didn\u2019t know the man was rich, either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe know very little. We know he passed away before Christmas in 2016. We know that he had over $11 million,\u201d Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is the largest unclaimed property return in Illinois history and national history,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The search for Stancak\u2019s kin had to be traced back in his family line to find people who were related to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe had to find, basically, the baptismal records, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage records; everything that we could find,\u201d Lawyer Kenneth Piercey said. Piercey is the representative for Stancak\u2019s estate and worked alongside a research firm to find the relatives. \u201cThe family had no idea and I think this will be life-changing for many of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Still, the mystery remains as to how he became so wealthy and his neighbors told the outlet that he often saved money, including through fixing his home himself instead of hiring someone. However, he did have his own boat called \u201cEasy\u201d and the spokesperson for the treasurer\u2019s office, Greg Rivara, reportedly said he made investments in mutual funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt is unclear how Mr. Stancak accumulated such wealth.
