But Weinstein\u2019s attorneys say the women were willing participants in those sexual acts because they stood to gain from them, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/weinstein-lawyers-metoo-jennifer-siebel-newsom-bimbo-1235413157\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at my client,\u201d attorney Mark Werksman said to the jury. \u201cHe\u2019s not Brad Pitt or George Clooney. Do you think these beautiful women had sex with him because he\u2019s hot? No, it\u2019s because he\u2019s powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Werksman admitted that Hollywood is different now, but at the time the alleged incidents occurred, \u201ctransactional sex\u201d was used and accepted in the industry. \u201cSex was a commodity\u201d for \u201crich and powerful men, like my client,\u201d he continued, referencing the infamous \u201ccasting couch\u201d where the sexual acts took place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransactional sex \u2026 it may have been unpleasant \u2026 and now embarrassing,\u201d Werksman continued. \u201c[But] everyone did it. He did it. They did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sequel to the casting couch is the #MeToo trial,\u201d the attorney said. \u201cThey will play the part of the damsel in distress with this beast. They have to lie to themselves, to you, to this court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir hypocrisy will be on full display,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the prosecution had earlier described Weinstein as a predator who sexually assaulted women against their will. The prosecution\u2019s opening statement included quotes from women who claim the producer forced them to participate in oral sex plus groped, fondled, and raped them, then threatened retaliation if they spoke up.<\/p>\n<p>Werksman said since the alleged abuse happened so long ago, it will come down to the jury deciding who to believe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith tremendous fame and fortune came fame of fortune seekers,\u201d Weinstein\u2019s defense said. He reiterated that the accusers all engaged in \u201cconsensual sex with Mr. Weinstein because they wanted to exploit their connection with Mr. Weinstein\u201d and knew they were having \u201csex in exchange for something with value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Werksman focused on one of the accusers, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. The attorney called her a \u201cprominent figure of the #MeToo movement\u201d who had consensual sex with Weinstein and later called it rape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The defense used Weinstein\u2019s campaign contributions as proof of his version of events. \u201cShe brought her husband to meet and party with her rapist.
