Tom Tillis (R-NC), Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), and five Republican colleagues pressed PayPal CEO Dan Schulman in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tillis.senate.gov\/services\/files\/3BABFD35-8B5B-41C9-A97F-08C4F160B9BB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> asking him to explain the \u201cprocesses and values\u201d in place that allowed the retracted policy to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayPal has consistently spread the dubious claim that this provision was \u2018never intended to be inserted in our policy\u2019 as stated by a company spokesperson,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cIf accurate, this statement indicates an astonishing lack of internal oversight at PayPal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company also defended its position by claiming that PayPal had long held the policy of withdrawing $2,500 from users\u2019 accounts after each violation of the acceptable use policy. After the lawmakers noted that the current list of prohibited activities largely entails breaches of law, they pointed out that the \u201caddition of a vague prohibition on spreading \u2018misinformation\u2019 not only would have concerningly expanded the scope of punishable actions, but also would have decreased clarity and increased subjectivity\u201d within the prohibited activities list.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) told The Daily Wire that PayPal has not yet provided responses to the lawmakers\u2019 inquiries, which they requested by October 28.<\/p>\n<p>PayPal trended on social media after the new acceptable use policy garnered public attention earlier this month, leading thousands of customers to voice their rejection of the move on social media and cancel their accounts. The company\u2019s stock price <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-paypal-stock-plummets-after-daily-wire-report-exposes-shocking-misinformation-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell precipitously<\/a> in subsequent trading as the backlash appeared to startle investors.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers requested information about internal processes at PayPal for drafting and vetting acceptable use policy updates, the identity of the party which drafted the misinformation and hate speech clause, and the degree to which users can be confident that they will not be punished for the spread of what PayPal unilaterally determines to be misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>Other platforms, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-end-of-conservative-books-amazon-quietly-bans-books-they-deem-offensive-hate-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/allie-beth-stuckey-suspended-from-twitter-after-challenging-fox-news-segment-that-went-viral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/meta-doubles-down-after-zuckerberg-reveals-how-facebook-censored-hunter-biden-laptop-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook,<\/a> have sanctioned conservatives over their positions on controversial social issues, including transgenderism, vaccine mandates, and homosexuality. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/what-gofundmes-trucker-convoy-targeting-says-about-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GoFundMe<\/a> seized millions raised for trucker protests in Canada earlier this year, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-senator-happy-about-getting-google-to-suppress-crisis-pregnancy-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a> recently began suppressing search results for crisis pregnancy centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreater encroachment by large technology and financial companies into public speech will only exacerbate Americans\u2019 increasing mistrust of such institutions,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cPolicies that empower companies to punish individuals\u2019 beliefs by acting as arbiters of fact in our ever-changing news and public debate environment represent poor business decisions. Instead, large technology and financial institutions should focus on serving the needs of their customers without bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have unsuccessfully proposed several pieces of legislation meant to uphold free speech on social media. Last summer, Daines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daines.senate.gov\/2021\/07\/14\/daines-introduces-bill-to-counter-big-techs-bias-protect-political-speech-beliefs-of-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> the Preserving Political Speech Online Act, which would prohibit the removal of content on the grounds of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or political affiliation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig tech\u2019s censorship and sanctioning of speech they simply disagree with is inexcusable \u2014 they must be held accountable,\u201d Daines told The Daily Wire. \u201cI\u2019ve introduced a bill to protect the exchange of ideas and political speech and will keep fighting to stop social media companies, financial institutions and large corporations from arbitrarily shutting down viewpoints that challenge the woke narrative of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Senate requested more information from PayPal about a retracted attempt to sanction users $2,500 for spreading \u201cmisinformation\u201d through the platform, as highlighted by a report from The Daily Wire.
