If they cannot, we will go back to the legislature to revoke this appropriation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The plan for the bathroom led to public outrage last week after the Chronicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/bayarea\/heatherknight\/article\/million-dollar-toilet-17518443.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the exorbitant cost, as well as the fact that it wouldn\u2019t be able to be used until 2025. It would fund one public bathroom, involving one toilet in a 150 square feet area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Community members have been wanting a bathroom in the location. Assembly Member Matt Haney worked to get the funds in California\u2019s annual budget this year, and Newsom\u2019s office reportedly reached out to him the same day the story broke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI support not spending the money \u2014 the cost is ridiculous, and it will take far too long,\u201d Haney said Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNoe Valley should get a bathroom, but $1.7 million should pay for seven bathrooms, and it should happen much quicker,\u201d Haney added. \u201cI fully support and agree with the governor here, and we\u2019re going to work together to get this done cheaper and quicker and also send the message that San Francisco needs to fix its broken processes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haney was set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/bayarea\/heatherknight\/article\/Celebration-for-S-F-s-1-7-million-toilet-17520998.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hold<\/a> a celebratory event last week for the toilet, but canceled it after the plan backfired. Haney reached out to Recreation and Park Director Phil Ginsburg to request more details, and Ginsburg said it was the first time Haney had asked questions about it. Ginsburg said the increasing constructions prices and political decisions regarding codes resulted in the \u201clong and expensive\u201d plan. He also noted that other bathrooms have cost around the same amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Chronicle also reported on the reason for the high cost, with \u201cRec and Park project management\u201d accounting for $175,000 of the price tag, and \u201cArchitecture &#038; engineering fees\u201d coming in at $300,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The \u201cBase construction contract\u201d was the most expensive \u2014 at $750,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The city\u2019s Recreation and Parks Department has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/california-gov-newsom-threatens-flush-san-franciscos-1-7-million-toilet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that the cost is because of high construction prices, and\u00a0the \u201ccost of planning, drawing, permits, reviews, public outreach and construction management.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe estimate high \u2014 not because we want to spend more money but because we want to ensure we can deliver projects to communities even if we are hit with unexpected costs,\u201d a spokesperson for the department told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic Governor of California Gavin Newsom has expressed dissatisfaction with San Francisco\u2019s plan to construct a $1.7 million public toilet.
