There\u2019s less room for different types of things,\u201d the 64-year-old director explained.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he would ever consider directing a Marvel movie, the \u201cEdward Scissorhands\u201d creator said he wasn\u2019t interested. \u201cI can only deal with one universe, l can\u2019t deal with a multi-universe,\u201d Burton explained.<\/p>\n<p>The filmmaker also told the crowd that he had a long relationship with Disney, starting with working as an animator there decades ago. He recalled being \u201chired and fired\u201d several times and pointed to working on the Disney project \u201cDumbo\u201d as a deciding factor for severing ties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy history is that I started out there. I was hired and fired, like, several times throughout my career there,\u201d Burton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing about \u2018Dumbo\u2019 is that\u2019s why I think my days with Disney are done,\u201d he continued. \u201cI realized that I was \u2018Dumbo,\u2019 that I was working in this horrible big circus and I needed to escape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat movie is quite autobiographical at a certain level,\u201d Burton said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite not wanting to work with Disney, the fantasy and horror master said he\u2019s not keen on making movies independently. \u201cHere\u2019s the thing. Independent film, I don\u2019t know. I\u2019ve only worked mainly with studios so I never really understood what an independent film was,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Burton was given the Prix Lumi\u00e8re award at the festival, which he told the publication had \u201cre-energized\u201d him and his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why this festival is so great because it\u2019s purely about cinema, rather than business or awards or anything else,\u201d he said of the prize. \u201cAll studio executives should be forced to come here to reinvigorate them. To remind them of why they wanted to make movies in the first place. It should be part of their job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burton was asked about his involvement in the remake of his 1988 classic, \u201cBeetlejuice,\u201d to which he replied, \u201cnothing is out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only know if I\u2019m making a film when I\u2019m actually on the set shooting. I try to go back to the root of everything. It springs from a seed and then it grows, rather than out of these statements,\u201d he said, despite previously denying he had anything to do with it.\u00a0 \u201cI am working on ideas and things but it\u2019s all very early days. We\u2019ll set how it goes.
