Likely saving the teen\u2019s life, a teammate named Jake quickly stepped in to perform CPR and the boys\u2019 coach, Jesse Atkinson, grabbed an automated external defibrillator (AED) to jolt Strasser\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis diagnosis is what\u2019s referred to as idiopathic ventricular fibrillation, which basically means we don\u2019t have another diagnosis,\u201d Dr. Adam Kean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/high-schooler-experiences-cardiac-arrest-symptoms-friend-coach-life-rcna52830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> TODAY. Kean treated Strasser at\u00a0Riley Hospital for Children after the collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Two-thirds of the deaths caused by SCA in minors occur during exercise or activity,\u00a0accounting for 75% of all athlete-related deaths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/conditions-diseases\/sudden-cardiac-arrest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to\u00a0Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough SCA is rare in children, it can affect anyone, even those who are physically fit,\u201d the hospital noted. \u201cEach year, SCA claims the lives of over 2,000 children and adolescents in the U.S. and accounts for approximately 3-5 percent of all deaths in children aged 5-19 years. It is also responsible for 10-15 percent of sudden unexpected infant deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strasser\u2019s parents were completely shocked by the incident since their son never had any issues with his health and received a clean bill of health from a physical just weeks before the event, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never would have thought it would be my kid,\u201d mother Laneia Strasser said, adding, \u201cWe were just shocked. It didn\u2019t seem real. He\u2019s never had any passing-out moments before. He\u2019s never had any signs of heart issues. It just completely came out of the blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laneia said she was told her son suffered \u201csudden cardiac arrest,\u201d not a heart attack.\u00a0\u201cIt was very traumatic. Scary, scary, scary morning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t believe what was going on because I hadn\u2019t thought anything was wrong before, and I\u2019ve never had anything like this happen at all,\u201d Strasser told TODAY. \u201cIt\u2019s scary and confusing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The athlete had to get an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to protect against any future incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there is a reversible cause or something that we can treat, we do not need the ICD,\u201d Dr. Kean explained. \u201cHis diagnosis is what\u2019s referred to as idiopathic ventricular fibrillation, which basically means we don\u2019t have another diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be good if there was obviously (a diagnosis of) his heart condition,\u201d said Andy Strasser, the teen\u2019s father. \u201cWe still have no idea what caused his cardiac arrest.
