Cake designer Cathy Miller has been vindicated in the California courts for practicing her Christian principles on the job. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uKjag4XgzT\">https:\/\/t.co\/uKjag4XgzT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 @ThomasMoreSoc (@ThomasMoreSoc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThomasMoreSoc\/status\/1583630801560039424?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 22, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cathy Miller, owner of Tastries Bakery and a schoolteacher for 30 years, was asked to bake a wedding cake by Eileen and Mireya Rodriguez-Del Rio in October 2017. After Miller politely suggested they look somewhere else, the lesbian couple first found another bakery that would make the cake for them, then complained to the Department of Fair Employment and Housing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe uncontroverted evidence showed that Miller\u2019s sincere faith permeates her life and work, and is \u2018founded on God\u2019s words,\u2019\u201d Judge Eric Bradshaw of the Superior Court of California in Kern County <a href=\"https:\/\/s4f4x7d5.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/BCV-18-102633-Decision.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in his decision<\/a>. \u201cAs the owner of Tastries, Miller considers herself a \u2018steward\u2019 of \u2018the Lord\u2019s business he put in (her) hands,\u2019 and that she \u2018cannot participate in something that would hurt him and not abide by his precepts in the Bible.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe applaud the court for this decision,\u201d Special Counsel Charles LiMandri of the Thomas More Society, which defended Miller, <a href=\"https:\/\/thomasmoresociety.org\/california-court-delivers-victory-for-cake-artist-targeted-for-religious-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>. \u201cThe freedom to practice one\u2019s religion is enshrined in the First Amendment, and the United States Supreme Court has long upheld the freedom of artistic expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs cited California\u2019s Unruh Civil Rights Act, which provides protection from discrimination by business establishments on the basis of race, ethnicity, or religion, to buttress their claim against Miller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a certain irony there that a law intended to protect individuals from religious discrimination was used to discriminate against Cathy for her religious beliefs,\u201d fellow Special Counsel Paul Jonna of the Thomas More Society pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>After the judge ruled in her favor Miller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11346241\/California-court-rules-favor-Christian-baker-refused-bake-cake-lesbian-wedding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on Facebook, \u201c\u2019We appreciate your prayers and support as we joyfully continue to do business with you in the future. I\u2019m hoping that in our community we can grow together and we should understand that we shouldn\u2019t push any agenda against anyone else.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, Anthony Mann, an attorney for the California Department of Fair Housing and Employment, tried to impugn Miller\u2019s Christian faith, asking her, \u201cDo you try to follow everything that the Bible says?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em>I do my best, but I\u2019m a sinner, but I do my best,\u201d Miller replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you follow some of the eating practices from the Old Testament in terms of not eating pigs, not eating shellfish, et cetera?\u201d Mann pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state was actually questioning the sincerity of Cathy\u2019s faith,\u201d Jonna declared. \u201cThe fact that they called Miller\u2019s open and sincerely held beliefs into question is almost as disturbing as quibbling over her status as an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bradshaw noted an incident in which a man wanted Miller to make a seven-tiered caked for his wedding anniversary at which he would tell his wife he was divorcing her. \u201cMiller declined to make the cake,\u201d Bradshaw noted, \u201ctelling the man that she was \u2018not going to be a part of something like that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A California judge ruled Friday in favor of a bakery in Bakersfield whose Christian owner refused to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple.
