Utah \u2014 yes, Utah \u2014 could keep Democrats in control of Congress\u2019s upper chamber unless conservatives in the Beehive State understand what\u2019s at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Utah\u2019s Senate race features unique dynamics. Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2022\/4\/23\/23037939\/mike-lee-evan-mcmullin-utah-democrat-party-convention-results-senate-election-kael-weston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decided not to nominate a candidate<\/a> of their own, allowing their party members to support declared independent Evan McMullin. In the same vein, the state\u2019s junior senator, Mitt Romney, has <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/29\/gop-senators-baffled-by-mitt-romneys-ploy-to-oust-mike-lee-and-maybe-thwart-a-majority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declined to endorse<\/a> his fellow Republican incumbent, Mike Lee, claiming he has good relationships with both Lee and McMullin.<\/p>\n<p>But look below the superficial differences, and a common theme emerges. McMullin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/10\/16\/utah-independent-senate-candidate-evan-mcmullin-00062004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claims<\/a> that, if elected, he would refuse to caucus with either the Democratic or Republican parties in the Senate. As a result, his failure to choose a party to caucus with would <em>de facto<\/em> amount to a gain for Senate Democrats and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.<\/p>\n<p>Given the historically tight margins in both the House and Senate during the current Congress, Utah voters should consider the consequences of effectively ceding a Senate seat to Democrats following the November elections. Should McMullin allow Democrats to expand their majority, the following are several realistic outcomes.<\/p>\n<p> Trillions in Spending <\/p>\n<p>Lest anyone forget, Democrats put forward a \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d (or more like bankrupt) bill last year that, if <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/13\/republicans-should-force-democrats-to-vote-on-the-full-5-trillion-build-back-bankrupt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all its entitlements<\/a> were extended over a full 10 years, would have resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/system\/files\/2021-12\/57673-BBBA-GrahamSmith-Letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly $5 trillion<\/a> in new spending. Only a single Senate vote prevented its enactment.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/16\/polls-show-bidenflation-is-killing-democrats-with-minority-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inflation still surging<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/17\/how-the-federal-reserve-keeps-stoking-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> raising interest rates in a belated attempt to keep up, the last thing American families need is Congress enacting additional tax-and-spend legislation proposed by the socialistic wing of the Democratic Party. But if McMullin\u2019s election cedes control of the Senate to Democrats, they could get exactly that.<\/p>\n<p> Filibuster \u2018Reform\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>A recent Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/how-utah-s-evan-mcmullin-could-become-a-key-u-s-senate-power-broker\/ar-AA136lUE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a> appeared to minimize the idea that a McMullin victory could cause dramatic policy changes. The piece claimed that \u201ceven if a Senator McMullin felt inclined to throw party control into turmoil \u2026 the chamber\u2019s filibuster rule requiring 60 votes to pass most legislation could stand in his way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, most Democrats want to abolish the filibuster. And McMullin has stated publicly that, while he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EvanMcMullin\/status\/1493710476856942592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doesn\u2019t \u201csupport abolishing the filibuster,\u201d<\/a> he does support filibuster \u201creform\u201d \u2014 \u201cincluding lowering the vote threshold required to overcome the filibuster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, McMullin would support many, if not most, proposals designed to empower Democrats to pursue their radical agenda on a straight party-line vote.<\/p>\n<p> Taxpayer-Funded Abortion-on-Demand <\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/10\/18\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-a-political-event-at-the-howard-theatre\/\">recent speech<\/a>, President Joe Biden made crystal clear his prime priority following the November elections, presuming Democrats retain the majority in both chambers:<\/p>\n<p>Here is the promise I make to you and the American people: The first bill that I will send to the Congress will be to codify <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.
