Their positions have been come <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/10\/putins-next-ukraine-disaster-is-russia-facing-total-defeat-in-kherson\/\">unattainable<\/a> under the constant pressure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive.\n<\/p>\n<p>But to get across the Dnipro, which is about one kilometer wide, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2022\/10\/22\/russia-ukraine-live-news-kherson-residents-told-to-leave-city\">Russian forces<\/a> need bridges. Antonovsky Bridge, the major vehicular bridge in the region, has been partially destroyed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/10\/22\/1130742768\/ukraine-power-grid-outages-record-damage\">Ukrainian long-range fires<\/a> interdiction campaign.\n<\/p>\n<p>To bypass that restriction of movement, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-putin-iran-antonio-guterres-middle-east-947a5054da9dc8f49f3593367ad1a25a\">Russian military<\/a> has built a pontoon bridge adjacent to the severely damaged Antonovsky Bridge. But that doesn\u2019t necessarily ensure that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/10\/a-russian-su-27-fighter-came-close-to-shooting-down-a-british-spy-plane\/\">Russian forces<\/a> on the western bank will be able to evacuate in time and in good order with all of the weapon systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the use of heavy barge bridges was almost certainly included in Soviet-era planning for operations in Europe, it is likely this is the first time the Russian military have [sic] needed to utilise this type of bridge for decades,\u201d the British Military Intelligence\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceHQ\/status\/1583696929698893825\">assessed<\/a>\u00a0in its latest estimate of the war.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing civilian barges likely provides <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/reason-vladimir-putin-imposed-martial-law-ukraine-analysis\/story?id=91863245\">Russia<\/a> additional material and logistics benefits, having lost significant quantities of military bridging equipment and engineering personnel during its invasion,\u201d the British Military Intelligence added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the barge bridge sustains damage, it is almost certain Russia will seek to repair or replace damaged sections quickly, as their forces and crossing points over the Dnipro river come under increasing pressure in Kherson,\u201d the British Military Intelligence assessed.\n<\/p>\n<p>But the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/ukraine-situation-report-russias-kherson-pontoon-bridge-attacked\">Ukrainian forces<\/a>\u00a0have already targeted and attacked the Russian makeshift pontoon bridge (essentially a series of barges strewn together). The fact that the pontoon bridge is right next to the Antonovsky Bridge makes targeting that much harder, even if the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/10\/putin-is-angry-ukraine-getting-more-himars-weapons-to-fight-russia\/\">HIMARS<\/a>) or M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/09\/himars-and-mlrs-are-great-but-ukraine-needs-more-m119a3-artillery-guns\/\">MLRS<\/a>) are used.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Russian Casualties in Ukraine\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Overall, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mil.gov.ua\/en\/news\/2022\/10\/22\/the-total-combat-losses-of-the-enemy-from-24-02-to-22-10\/\">claimed<\/a> that as of Saturday, Ukrainian forces have killed approximately 67,070 Russian troops (and wounded approximately thrice that number), destroyed 270 fighter, attack, and transport jets, 243 attack and transport helicopters, 2,579 tanks, 1,653 artillery pieces, 5,266 armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, 373 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), 16 boats and cutters, 4,021 vehicles and fuel tanks, 189 anti-aircraft batteries, 1,341 tactical unmanned aerial systems, 148 special equipment platforms, such as bridging vehicles, and four mobile Iskander ballistic missile systems, and 329 cruise missiles shot down by the Ukrainian air defenses.\n<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Russia and Iran: An Alliance of Pariahs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There has been a lot of talk about the military assistance that Iran has been providing to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-war-diaries-ukrainians-laughing-in-the-face-of-evil-amid-threat-of-nuclear-escalation-12725852\">Russia<\/a>. The Supreme Leader should answer why he has Iran directly engaged on the ground and through the provision of weapons that enable Russia to kill civilians and damage civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
