The comments come in the wake of the historic Chinese Communist Party\u2019s 20th Party Congress, where Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chinas-xi-issues-dark-warning-on-taiwan-as-he-consolidates-power-over-ccp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dark warning<\/a> for the small island and secured another term in full control of China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about the 2027 window, in my mind that has to be a 2022 window or potentially a 2023 window,\u201d Gilday said. \u201cI can\u2019t rule that out. I don\u2019t mean at all to be alarmist by saying that, it\u2019s just that we can\u2019t wish that away.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the Party Congress a week ago, President Xi talked tough on Taiwan, calling for \u201creunification\u201d and even claiming the communist nation is willing to use force to achieve it, saying\u00a0 they \u201creserve the option of taking all measures necessary.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wheels of history are rolling on towards China\u2019s reunification and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,\u201d Xi said in his opening address at the party congress. \u201cComplete reunification of our country must be realized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Admiral Gilday said he is prioritizing \u201cmaking sure the ships we are fielding today are as ready as they can be\u201d and added that Congress is currently considering a $27.5 billion shipbuilding budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s how the Chinese behave and what they do,\u201d Gilday said when asked about the Communist party congress, adding, \u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen over the past 20 years is that they have delivered on every promise they have made earlier than they said they were going to deliver on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, has been independently governed from mainland China since 1949. China holds a \u201cOne China\u201d policy, asserting that Taiwan is a part of China. A 2021 survey by National Chengchi University in Taiwan found that a majority of Taiwanese people, 62%, believed that they were \u201cexclusively Taiwanese,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/backgrounder\/china-taiwan-relations-tension-us-policy-biden#chapter-title-0-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Council on Foreign Relations<\/a>. On the other hand, 32% considered themselves both Taiwanese and Chinese.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan has been continuously provoked by China, especially since the election of Taiwan\u2019s President Tsai Ing-wen, whose Democratic Progressive Party favors independence from China. Following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s (D-CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-concerned-about-chinas-reaction-to-pelosi-taiwan-trip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip to Taiwan<\/a> in August, China employed numerous provocative measures, including sending Chinese planes and ships in and near the Taiwan strait, with 21 of them entering Taiwan\u2019s air defense zone.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/u-s-relations-with-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of State<\/a>, the position the United States holds on Taiwan opposes \u201cany unilateral changes to the status quo from either side,\u201d adding that the U.S. does not support independence for Taiwan, expecting \u201cdifferences to be resolved by peaceful means.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-antony-j-blinken-at-a-conversation-on-the-evolution-and-importance-of-technology-diplomacy-and-national-security-with-66th-secretary-of-state-condoleezza-rice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conversation<\/a>\u00a0with former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and former Secretary of Defense James Mattis early last week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, \u201cthere has been a change in approach from Beijing toward Taiwan in recent years.\u201d He continued, saying China is \u201cpursu[ing] unification on a much faster timeline.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-declares-u-s-troops-will-engage-in-war-with-china-if-taiwan-attacked-white-house-walks-back-statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> last month during a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview that if \u201cthere was an unprecedented attack,\u201d U.S. forces would defend Taiwan, a comment later walked back by the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A U.S. Navy Admiral is warning that China could invade Taiwan much sooner than previously thought, claiming the Chinese almost always deliver on their promises sooner than expected.\u00a0 Admiral Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, issued the alert while speaking at the Atlantic Council\u2019s Forward Defense\u2019s Commander\u2019s Series on Wednesday.
