Art the Clown is recovering nicely from a gunshot wound to the brain, and he\u2019s eager to launder his blood-stained costume.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s a showman if nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>The timeline then flashes forward one year, and we\u2019re introduced to a single mom and her two children. The oldest, Sienna (Lauren LaVera), is eager to show off her homemade Halloween costume, but the pall of Art\u2019s rampage makes the holiday bittersweet.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t help that Sienna\u2019s late father has an odd connection to the killer clown, something writer\/Director Damien Leone teases early on.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out Art prefers to work only once a year \u2013 on Oct. 31. Sienna and friends will learn this the hard way.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cji4fXRPwjM\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Leone knows his fan base, which<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/terrifier-2#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> ponied up plenty <\/a>to make \u201cTerrifier 2\u201d happen, want more extreme bloodshed. And he delivers.<\/p>\n<p>The practical effects are as disgusting as possible, and the camera rubs our nose in it. Yet Art\u2019s maniacal glee softens the blow, to a degree. His impish joy ensures the franchise doesn\u2019t revive the torture porn era, thank goodness.<\/p>\n<p>The first \u201cTerrifier\u201d aped \u201980s horror, down to some disinterested performances and that old-school bloodshed. The sequel continues in that vein, eschewing the prudish trend in modern horror.<\/p>\n<p>LaVera\u2019s curves are on full display through much of the film, for starters. One of the potential victims lights up a cigarette, another 21st century no-no. And then there\u2019s the score by Paul Wiley, which leans into synthesizer riffs that accentuates the mayhem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/x-review-ti-west\/\"><strong>RELATED: HOW \u2018X\u2019 CAPTURES BEST OF \u201970s HORROR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>None of the gore would matter if Leone didn\u2019t know how to build suspense. His tactics are similar here to the first film. Some shocks we see coming a mile away, and we greet them with a wicked smile.<\/p>\n<p>What does Art have up his blood-splattered sleeve next?<\/p>\n<p>The rest? Leone understands the element of surprise remains critical to the genre. It\u2019s one of many reasons the recent \u201cHalloween\u201d reboot started strong but quickly ran out of creative gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerrifier 2\u2019s\u201d best scare is of the jump variety, but it\u2019s so perfectly executed you won\u2019t feel guilty for \u00a0being startled.<\/p>\n<p>Enough can\u2019t be said of David Howard Thornton\u2019s work bringing Art the Clown to life. Thornton\u2019s masterful turn demands a real clown\u2019s tool kit, and his garish makeup accentuates that skeletal sneer. We\u2019ve seen serial killers slaughter without emotion or crack wise, a la Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Art the Clown delights in his murderous ways, silently guffawing as his victims draw their final breath.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u2026 chilling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/horror-influencers-victims\/\"><strong>RELATED: HORROR\u2019S NEW GO-TO VICTIM \u2013 INFLUENCERS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Watch Art lose his balance after whacking someone with a mallet. It\u2019s a slight wobble, but it adds to the carnival-like atmosphere Leone and co. brings to the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Zombie\u2019s redneck horror quickly lost its appeal after \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Rejects,\u201d but Leone\u2019s sense of disturbing imagery is already light years beyond anything Zombie could conjure.<\/p>\n<p>The franchise\u2019s extreme gore may spawn plenty of think pieces on pop culture\u2019s dark underbelly. Fair enough.<\/p>\n<p>None of \u201cTerrifier 2\u201d would matter, though, if Leone didn\u2019t know the genre fundamentals by heart. His skill, passion and willingness to break horror boundaries, have made this series essential viewing (assuming your stomach is made of cast iron or similar stuff).<\/p>\n<p>Not every element of the sequel clicks to perfection. Art\u2019s ghastly accomplice, a clown girl who may or may not be real, feels like a stretch. A subplot involving a clown-related eatery, complete with its own jingle, adds to the sense of unease but is still a curiosity item.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s most shocking part?<\/p>\n<p>The running time is roughly two hours and fifteen minutes in a genre known for its brevity. But \u201cTerrifier 2\u201d moves. You can spot moments to be trimmed, but the film\u2019s momentum never lets up. (Just don\u2019t leave after the end credits begin\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerrifier 2\u201d doesn\u2019t stray from the saga\u2019s core DNA, but it doesn\u2019t have that \u201csequel\u201d feel like we\u2019ve been here before. That may change with the inevitable third installment.<\/p>\n<p>For now, savor Leone\u2019s original voice and the best horror performance in ages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HiT or Miss<\/strong>: \u201cTerrifier 2\u201d is not for the faint of heart or even casual horror movie buffs.
