The move had echoes of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler\u2019s pledge to \u201cliberate\u201d ethnic Germans in the Sudetenland when he invaded Czechoslovakia in 1938. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/article\/opinion\/op-ed\/putin-and-the-shadow-of-munich.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Putin even waited until Sept. 30 \u2014<\/a> the 84th anniversary of the disastrous Munich Agreement that permitted Hitler\u2019s annexation of the Sudetenland \u2014 to announce the Russian annexation of Donbas, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.<\/p>\n<p>The Russians had wanted to mount a triumphant concert celebrating \u201cthe return of peaceful life\u201d to Kherson on Oct. 1 and demanded the cooperation of the Gileya Chamber Orchestra and its acclaimed conductor, Kerpatenko. The Russians were preparing to weaponize classical music in the service of national glory \u2014 another military propaganda tool perfected in Nazi Germany. But as I discovered after years of research on my book, \u201cOverture of Hope: Two Sisters\u2019 Daring Plan that Saved Opera\u2019s Jewish Stars from the Third Reich,\u201d Krauss also secretly used his position to help save dozens of Jewish musicians and scholars. He wisely kept his opinions about Hitler to himself.<\/p>\n<p>Kerpatenko refused to keep silent about the Russian invasion, and he refused to be a tool for the military. A Ukrainian patriot, he had posted numerous anti-Russian messages on Facebook after the invasion. Don\u2019t save me from myself by threatening me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kerpatenko, an \u201cextremely talented and humble guy,\u201d according to a childhood friend, had grown up an orphan.
