(Vyacheslav Madiyevskyy\/ Ukrinform\/Future Publishing via Getty Images)<\/span><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>All told, that\u2019s more than 1.09 million rounds which weigh well in excess of 50,000 tons combined \u2014 close to twice as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/stli\/learn\/historyculture\/statue-statistics.htm\">the Statue of Liberty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The rounds are part of more than $18.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the Biden Administration, including approximately $17.6 billion since the beginning of Russia\u2019s full-on invasion on Feb. 24.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The M795 projectile is the standard round for the 155mm M777 towed howitzers used by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>It is a \u201c103lb 155mm high fragmentation steel (HF1) body projectile filled with 23.8lbs of TNT or IMX-101 with a gilded metal rotating band for compatibility with all current and future towed and self-propelled 155mm howitzers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gd-ots.com\/munitions\/artillery\/155m-m795\/\">according to its manufacturer, General Dynamics<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"image MuiBox-root css-19jy8mj\"><span class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-caption css-fqlof0\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">The M795 155mm standard howitzer round. (General Dynamics photo)<\/span><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The M982 Excalibur is a 155mm round that uses GPS and inertial guidance to find its target while also extending the range at which it can strike.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>To use the guided round, troops input location data into the gun&#8217;s guidance unit that uploads it into the projectile before sending it downrange. More complex salvos can also be programmed. (U.S. Army photo)<\/span><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The RAAMS is a 155mm artillery shell that contains nine individual anti-tank mines that are released along a portion of the terminal phase of the round&#8217;s flight path. These shells can be used to rapidly emplace minefields to complicate the movements of enemy armored vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Though the introduction of multiple launch rocket systems like M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/what-himars-rocket-systems-can-and-cant-do-for-ukraine\">or HIMARS<\/a>, and guided 227mm M31 rockets for them to fire have given Ukraine extended reach on the battlefield, howitzers have been and remain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/ukraines-ability-to-withstand-russian-artillery-critical-to-fight-for-donbas\">absolutely critical and a mainstay of its fight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>While the U.S. has provided 20 HIMARS to Ukraine with another 18 promised \u2014 M270 multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) that are capable of firing the same rounds have also been donated by NATO allies \u2014 it has provided 142 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army-technology.com\/projects\/ufh\/\">M777A2 towed Howitzer<\/a>s and 36 105mm howitzers. Other nations have contributed howitzers as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>With so many standard howitzer rounds shipped off to Ukraine, there is growing concern about whether enough ammunition exists for the U.S. should it get into a major conflict of its own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"image MuiBox-root css-19jy8mj\"><span class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-caption css-fqlof0\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">Ukrainian soldier prepares powder charges for US-made M777 howitzers prior to loading their gun on the front line in the Kharkiv region. (Photo by SERGEY BOBOK \/ AFP) (Photo by SERGEY BOBOK\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/span><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ukraine-war-depleting-u-s-ammunition-stockpiles-sparking-pentagon-concern-11661792188\">the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported<\/a> that the military is now conducting \u201can ammunitions industrial base deep dive\u201d to determine how to support Ukraine while protecting \u201cour own supply needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The Army, the <em>Journal<\/em> reported,\u00a0said it also asked Capitol Hill for $500 million a year in upgrade efforts for the Army\u2019s ammunition plants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, the service is relying on existing contracts to increase production of ammunition, but it hasn\u2019t signed new contracts to account for the higher amounts it will need to replenish its stocks, according to Army officials.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>In Fiscal Year 2023, the Army only planned to buy 29,000 of the basic high explosive projectiles (M795), according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/united-states-running-out-weapons-send-ukraine\">Center for Strategic &#038; International Studies (CSIS)<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cSurge capacity was 288,000 projectiles per year, though with a 48-month lead time,\u201d CSIS wrote last month. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The good news for Ukraine is that the U.S. is not the only nation providing Ukraine with howitzers and associated ammunition. And the U.S. and its allies have now had six meetings of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/patriot-floated-as-possible-air-defense-system-for-ukraine-by-top-u-s-general\">Defense Contact Group<\/a>, some 50 nations working together to provide Ukraine with arms while ensuring their own supplies are sufficient given the possibility of a widening war in Europe and an outbreak of hostilities with China.
