It turns a passable romantic comedy into one well worth your while.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts and Clooney play a divorced couple who can\u2019t stand being in the same room together. Their bickering gives the film an early, saucy kick.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia and David push past their differences on behalf of their headstrong daughter, Lily (Kaitlyn Dever). She\u2019s engaged to a young man she barely knows, casting her professional dreams aside to hang with a seaweed farmer in Bali.<\/p>\n<p>Lily can\u2019t make the same mistake they made all those years ago, her parents cry. And they\u2019ll stop the wedding at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s another 21st century rom-com gimmick, the kind that plagued duds like \u201cHow to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.\u201d Yet \u201cTicket to Paradise\u201d unfolds at an organic pace, with Georgia and David navigating their love for Lily with the heartfelt fear she\u2019s making the mistake of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>And, shock of all shocks, the ex-lovers realize they don\u2019t hate each other as much as they assumed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/george-clooney-incredible-shrinking-movie-star\/\"><strong>RELATED: GEORGE CLOONEY, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MOVIE STAR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cParadise\u201d spends most of its running time in Bali\u2019s sumptuous settings (although it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/life-and-luxury\/travel\/why-the-new-clooney-and-roberts-bali-film-was-shot-in-queensland-20220908-p5bglm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actually shot in Australia<\/a>), so the film is never less than easy on the eyes. The same holds true for Roberts and Clooney, an older couple by rom-com standards. They\u2019re allowed to be attractive, alluring and, best of all, complex.<\/p>\n<p>The screenplay mourns both their youth and the end of their marriage. The latter is initially played for laughs, but later we learn the details of their complicated split.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTicket to Paradise\u201d could use some spiky supporting players, the kind great rom-coms lean on for laughs. Lily\u2019s gal pal (Billie Lourd) is up to the task, but the story doesn\u2019t give her enough to do.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cj3lMfuS4_w\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lily\u2019s betrothed, Gede (Maxime Bouttier), is too bland, even though he occasionally challenges David\u2019s motives. Gede\u2019s family falls into the generically woke trap of depicting different cultures as if they lack the flaws we all experience.<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t hurt for a family member to resent Lily\u2019s intrusion into their lives or share some less than noble sentiments. Perhaps the screenwriters feared a Cancel Culture attack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/schumer-snatched-not-woke-critics\/\">a la \u201cSnatched\u201d<\/a> and played it safe.<\/p>\n<p>The worst character in this \u201cParadise?\u201d Georgia\u2019s new boy-toy (Lucas Bravo), who dotes on her every syllable in a way that never makes him a real romantic threat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/can-meg-ryan-revive-the-rom-com\/\"><strong>RELATED: CAN MEG RYAN REVIVE THE ROM-COM?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The film ultimately asks a tough but essential question. Can Georgia and David reignite the romantic sparks that fueled their marriage, and will that play out in ways that win audiences over?<\/p>\n<p>Director\/co-writer Ol Parker (\u201cThe Best Exotic Marigold Hotel\u201d) makes it happen, even if it means the film\u2019s pacing could use a tune-up. The third act alone could use some trimming for time\u2019s sake alone.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts and Clooney handle the rest, looking so comfortable that we hope they can stop fighting long enough for one long, soulful buss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HiT or Miss<\/strong>: \u201cTicket to Paradise\u201d is both smart and patient, allowing its stars to bring the best out of the material in play.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Movie stars no longer put fannies in the seats.
