Ron DeSantis (R) affirmed his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FLSurgeonGen\/status\/1582480134342209536\">surgeon general&#8217;s Tuesday promise<\/a>. &#8220;As long as I&#8217;m kickin&#8217; and screamin&#8217;, there will be no COVID shot mandates for your kids,&#8221; he told a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1583154047972159488\">press conference<\/a>. &#8220;I get a kick out of it when people kind of compare it to MMR, things that have been around for decades,&#8221; he said, referring to the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next several hours, a procession of Republican governors \u2014 including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovBillLee\/status\/1583164112661381122\">Tennessee&#8217;s Bill Lee<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorKayIvey\/status\/1583201473844088832\">Alabama&#8217;s Kay Ivey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovParsonMO\/status\/1583187051381682176\">Missouri&#8217;s Mike Parson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IAGovernor\/status\/1583221259810529281\">Iowa&#8217;s Kim Reynolds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/governor\/newsroom\/newsroom\/2022\/october2022\/governor-stitt--commissioner-reed-clarify-kids-in-oklahoma-not-r.html\">Oklahoma&#8217;s Kevin Stitt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorVA\/status\/1583272988752781313\">Glenn Youngkin of Virginia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpencerJCox\/status\/1583290106160369665\">Utah&#8217;s Spencer Cox<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 echoed DeSantis&#8217; statement, citing the primacy of parental choice and the proactive work of their legislatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republican governors speaking up Friday include <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovKemp\/status\/1583505095790309376\">Georgia&#8217;s Brian Kemp<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AsaHutchinson\/status\/1583511225438457857\">Arkansas&#8217; Asa Hutchinson<\/a>, who emphasized he encourages Arkansans to get vaccinated but won&#8217;t require it for schoolchildren or anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>The ACIP vote has quickly become an issue on the campaign trail. South Dakota Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KristiNoem\/status\/1582890105898835969\">Kristi Noem<\/a> highlighted her Democratic opponent&#8217;s support for vaccine mandates Wednesday and her commitment to &#8220;fight the federal government&#8221; if it tries to enforce COVID vaccination for schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p>Republican gubernatorial challengers \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leezeldin\/status\/1582915135324446720\">Rep. Lee Zeldin<\/a> in New York, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TudorDixon\/status\/1583089256271998978\">Tudor Dixon<\/a> in Michigan, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drscottjensen\/status\/1583115219035127811\">Scott Jensen<\/a> in Minnesota and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/heidiganahl\/status\/1583156722255876096\">Heidi Ganahl<\/a> in Colorado \u2014 have emphasized their opposition to COVID vaccine mandates in education.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado voters don&#8217;t currently have a pro-mandate candidate. A spokesperson for Democratic Gov. Jared Polis told <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyleClark\/status\/1583239251717935105\">9News Denver<\/a> that he backs the state health department&#8217;s current opposition to requiring COVID vaccines to attend school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the expected response as Colorado also doesn&#8217;t require the flu shot for school kids, the state has a low-bar for non-medical exemptions, and Polis has opposed back-to-school vaccine mandates for teachers and staff,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyleClark\/status\/1583239253974474752\">9News host Kyle Clark<\/a> tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is increasingly an international outlier in promoting or even allowing COVID vaccination of children (absent special circumstances) and downplaying serious adverse events.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark has stopped offering the shots under age 18 and Sweden under age 11, while Finland, Iceland and Norway don&#8217;t recommend them for 5-11 year-olds, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/TracyBethHoeg\/status\/1569131107203031040\">Danish-American epidemiologist Tracy Beth Hoeg<\/a>. Last month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/1102459\/Greenbook-chapter-14a-4September22.pdf\">U.K. suggested it was phasing out 5-11 vaccination<\/a>, given the age group&#8217;s low risk from COVID and high natural immunity.<\/p>\n<p>Moderna&#8217;s clinical trial for children 6 months to 5 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/acip\/recs\/grade\/covid-19-moderna-vaccine-6-months-5-years.html#table03a\">limited data from which was given to the CDC<\/a> earlier this year, showed a serious adverse event rate of roughly 1 in 200, including one recipient who suffered &#8220;fever and febrile seizure.&#8221; The SAE rate for placebo recipients was roughly 1 in 530.<\/p>\n<p>The drugmaker published the full results of that trial in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2209367\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a> Wednesday. Former New York Times drug industry reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/alexberenson.substack.com\/p\/urgent-update-on-yesterdays-article\/comments\">Alex Berenson found an alarming SAE<\/a> buried deep in the appendix: &#8220;new-onset Type 1 diabetes mellitus and diabetic ketoacidosis in a 1-year-old female reported 37 days post dose 2.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New research is finding COVID vaccine risks in other unexpected populations. In Germany, where the shots aren&#8217;t authorized for children under 5 but are allowed on an &#8220;off-label&#8221; basis with the informed consent of parents, researchers surveyed those families.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 7,806 children under 5 in the responses, 10 who received the two-dose Pfizer shot were hospitalized, according to the study published in a <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2797451\">Journal of the American Medical Association publication<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers compared the results with symptoms in the same group of children during the same time period following on-label, non-COVID vaccinations. Unlike the COVID jabs, the latter caused no symptoms that lasted longer than 3 months or required inpatient treatment. COVID vaccines were about 60% more likely to cause symptoms of any severity.<\/p>\n<p>That 1-in-780 risk of hospitalization is several times higher than estimated post-vaccination heart inflammation rates in young men from ongoing studies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMc2207270\">Wednesday update to a New England Journal of Medicine study<\/a> of post-Pfizer myocarditis in Israel, looking at 12-15 year-olds specifically, found a rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/suppl\/10.1056\/NEJMc2207270\/suppl_file\/nejmc2207270_appendix.pdf\">nearly 9 per 100,000 vaccinations<\/a> in males, about twice the myocarditis rate when females were included.
