Across America, cities burned. Some cities burned a little, others burned a lot. In the end, there was over <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/09\/16\/riots-following-george-floyds-death-could-cost-up-to-2b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$2 billion<\/a> in insured damage and countless more in uninsured damage caused by rioters and looters. More than 20 lives were lost. Hundreds of police officers were injured.<\/p>\n<p>Also on June 3, 2020, the <em>New York Times<\/em> published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/03\/opinion\/tom-cotton-protests-military.html?action=click&#038;module=Opinion&#038;pgtype=Homepage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">op-ed<\/a> by a sitting United States Senator. The op-ed called for a crackdown, not on legitimate, constitutionally protected protestors but on the indiscriminate rioting and damage caused by criminals and goons dressed in black and cowards hiding their faces. The op-ed called a group that everyone knew was involved in broad rioting. Antifa. Tom Cotton had submitted the op-ed and the <em>Times<\/em> ran it.<\/p>\n<p>But another \u201criot\u201d broke out, not in the streets of New York but in the newsroom. It wasn\u2019t a riot in the literal sense \u2013 the rioters didn\u2019t burn the building down, but they got their torches out and demanded heads. \u201cHow dare the <em>New York Times<\/em> run an op-ed like this!?\u201d Staff, some of them straight out of J School and writing obituaries, were demanding the resignations of editors who had the gall to approve Tom Cotton\u2019s op-ed.\u00a0 The mob got their capitulation. They had their head on a stick. The opinion section editor, James Bennet, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/06\/07\/nyt-opinion-bennet-resigns-cotton-op-ed-306317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced out<\/a> by the mob. The publisher surrendered and demanded that Bennet apologize.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Bennet <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/18\/ex-ny-times-opinion-editor-slams-ag-sulzberger-he-set-me-on-fire-and-threw-me-in-the-garbage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalled<\/a> the witch hunt for what it was. A mob of leftist progressive goons demanding progressive fealty.\u00a0 Bennet said the publisher \u201cset me on fire\u201d and that paper\u00a0\u201cblew the opportunity to make clear that the <em>New York Times<\/em> doesn\u2019t exist just to tell progressives how progressives should view reality\u201d, said Bennet.<\/p>\n<p>Bari Weiss left the <em>New York Times,<\/em> in no small part because the publisher bowed a knee to a mob who claimed the Cotton op-ed put \u201cblack staff\u201d members in harm\u2019s way.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after the op-ed was published, the <em>Times<\/em> printed an apology above the online version. It began with this groveling prose:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>After publication, this essay met strong criticism from many readers (and many Times colleagues), prompting editors to review the piece and the editing process. Based on that review, we have concluded that the essay fell short of our standards and should not have been published.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Cotton op-ed didn\u2019t put any lives in danger. No black or minority <em>Times<\/em> employee was threatened or in danger because of it. Those claims were hyperbolic nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the <em>New York Times<\/em> would never publish a Cotton-like opinion piece because at the <em>Times<\/em>, as noted by Bari Weiss in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bariweiss.com\/resignation-letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resignation letter<\/a>, the publisher and editors no longer control the dialogue and tenor at there. It\u2019s the goons in the newsroom who, if they scream loud enough, get their way. Editorials by an eco-terrorist will get a green light because, as Bennet describes, it fits within the progressive framework and expresses progressive \u201creality\u201d. When Biden claims that we are under an existential threat because of climate change, publishing an op-ed by a man who wrote a book called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/How_to_Blow_Up_a_Pipeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201chow to blow up a pipeline\u201d<\/a> seems appropriate. That op-ed was published on Thursday, October 20, 2022, penned by eco-extremist and often labeled eco-terrorist, Andreas Malm.<\/p>\n<p>Was there a revolt in the Newsroom? Will an editor get the boot because they published an op-ed praising eco-vandals and eco-terrorist? No.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/20\/opinion\/just-stop-oil-soup-sunflowers-climate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malm op-ed<\/a>\u00a0doesn\u2019t dance around. There is a call to arms. The destruction of property to stop fossil fuel use and consumption is permitted, even mandated. He says it plainly and directly:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For the planet to retain a chance of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels, all oil and gas production in rich countries \u2014 including the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and Qatar \u2014 must be terminated within\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/publications\/report\/phaseout-pathways-fossil-fuel-production-within-paris-compliant-carbon-budgets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12 years<\/a>. Not only can there be no new fossil fuel installations; 40 percent of reserves already developed must be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ac6228\/meta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left in the ground<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As for the ethics of property destruction, it is not, in this case, very complicated. Fossil fuels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-021-24487-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kill people<\/a>. If you disrupt the flow of such fuels and damage the machinery they impel, you prevent deaths.<\/p>\n<p>You may destroy an inanimate object \u2014 and no one in the climate movement is suggesting anything other than targeting dead things \u2014 so as to protect living beings. Or, put differently, if you are locked in a house on fire, you have a right to break some windows to get out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Holy flipping mackerel. The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytopinion?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@nytopinion<\/a> platforms an eco-terrorist:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Malm is the author of \u201cHow to Blow Up a Pipeline: Learning to Fight in a World on Fire.\u201d&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When activists from the same group smashed gas stations in April this year, they hit the nail on the head.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Rm3xoKKasn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/Rm3xoKKasn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jeryl Bier (@JerylBier) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JerylBier\/status\/1583248440519446530?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 21, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the <em>New York Times<\/em>, Tom Cotton\u2019s suggested that to prevent property destruction and the deaths that followed the government could utilize police tactics and the military. The country didn\u2019t employ those tactics and the country burned. People died.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the <em>Times<\/em> has no objection to publishing the opinion of an eco-terrorist who advocates property destruction and the immediate termination of fossil fuel use. In his opinion, \u201cdestruction\u201d of what he euphemistically called \u201cdead things\u201d like SUVs, gas stations, and blowing up pipelines is allowed because, if we don\u2019t, the planet will die.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em> green-lit and published an op-ed that quite literally called on eco-terrorists to ruin, destroy and disable property because our \u201chouse is burning\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Are there any adults left at the <em>New York Times<\/em>? In my opinion, no.
