At least one of the documents contained information related to Iran\u2019s missile program, the sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents seized 103 classified documents from Mar-a-Lago, Trump\u2019s Florida residence and resort, in an August raid. Eighteen of those documents have been identified as top secret, the highest level of classification for sensitive material.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/09\/06\/trump-nuclear-documents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> last month that agents had found papers having to do with a foreign nation\u2019s nuclear capabilities in the trove of documents seized from Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago on August 8 stemmed out of a dispute between the National Archives and Trump. After Trump left the White House in January 2021, the archives noticed that some documents from Trump\u2019s presidency were not stored at the archives as required by law. Federal agents later came to believe that the missing documents were being stored at Mar-a-Lago along with classified documents containing sensitive material.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fbi-raided-trump-of-books-clothing-gift-items-news-clippings-court-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seized<\/a> tens of thousands of pages of documents along with a series of other objects, including books, gifts, clothing, and news articles. The bureau is conducting an investigation into Trump and his aids\u2019 handling of the classified materials.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has claimed that none of what was removed from Mar-a-Lago was classified material. He has stated that a president\u2019s declassification authority is broad and vaguely defined. In an interview with Fox News\u2019 Sean Hannity last month, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-i-could-declassify-documents-even-by-thinking-about-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that according to some experts, he could declassify documents just by \u201cthinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere doesn\u2019t have to be a process, as I understand it. You know, different people say different things, but as I understand there doesn\u2019t have to be,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIf you\u2019re the President of the United States, you can declassify just by saying it\u2019s declassified. Even by thinking about it, because you\u2019re sending it to Mar-a-Lago or to wherever you\u2019re sending it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explanation has not appeared to sway Judge Raymond Dearie, who was appointed to serve as special master in the case by Judge Aileen Cannon last month. Dearie is responsible for reviewing everything seized from Mar-a-Lago, but the classified material. He will mediate claims of privileged materials claimed by Trump.<\/p>\n<p>During a court hearing last month, Dearie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/trump-declassified-documents-special-master-ruling-justice-department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared<\/a> to favor the Department of Justice\u2019s argument that 103 pages of classified material taken from Mar-a-Lago were never declassified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow am I going to verify the classification? \u2026 What business is it of the court?\u201d Dearie asked Trump\u2019s legal team. Dearie said that the Justice Department had presented \u201cprima facie evidence\u201d that the records were classified. \u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned, that\u2019s the end of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s legal team said it could not submit evidence of declassification at that time. \u201cWe\u2019re not in a position nor should we be in a position at this juncture to fully disclose a substantive defense,\u201d Trump attorney Jim Trusty said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some of the classified documents taken by the FBI from former President Donald Trump\u2019s home in Florida reportedly relate to sensitive U.S. intelligence on Iran and China.
