Tim Ryan (D-OH) in a pair of debates held on October 10 and 17, and since then Vance\u2019s poll numbers have seen a bump.<\/p>\n<p>Vance is up by 4.1% over Ryan in a\u00a0Cygnal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cygn.al\/cygnal-momentum-tracking-poll-ohio-statewide-10-19-22\/\">poll<\/a>, beyond the poll\u2019s 2.58% margin of error. The poll was conducted from\u00a0October 14-18 and surveyed nearly 1,500 likely voters in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan still leads by about 8% among Independents, but his popularity among those voters is not enough to put him in the lead.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Vance leads by a huge margin among Ohio voters who have an unfavorable view of President Joe Biden,\u00a072% to 19%.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has struggled to keep his favorability and job approval numbers above water in recent weeks. Nearly 53% of people have an unfavorable view of the president, compared to as low as 38% when he was elected, <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.morningconsult.com\/wp-uploads\/2021\/02\/03074817\/2101110_crosstabs_POLITICO_RVs_v1.pdf\">according<\/a> to some polls. His job approval numbers are even worse, with about 54% of people saying they disapprove of the job Biden is doing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/president-biden-job-approval-7320.html\">according<\/a> to Real Clear Politics.<\/p>\n<p>Other polls had shown Vance beating Ryan but only within the margin of error, essentially putting the candidates in a dead heat.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Real Clear Politics\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/senate\/oh\/ohio_senate_vance_vs_ryan-7624.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average<\/a>\u00a0of polls, Vance now leads Ryan by 2.5 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>One earlier poll in September had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc4i.com\/news\/your-local-election-hq\/one-candidate-now-leads-ohios-u-s-senate-race-latest-poll-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shown<\/a> Ryan with a statistical lead, but the most recent polls either show Vance leading or the candidates tied.<\/p>\n<p>Vance, a venture capitalist who first became known through his 2016 memoir \u201cHillbilly Elegy,\u201d is <a href=\"https:\/\/jdvance.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">running<\/a> on a platform of being a \u201cconservative outsider\u201d who\u00a0\u201cknows what it\u2019s like to live in a left-behind community\u201d and will fight for normal Americans.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday in their last debate before the election, both Vance and Ryan went on the attack, sparring over racism and immigration, among other topics.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/10\/18\/jd-vance-tim-ryan-ohio-senate-debate-racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> Vance of \u201cpeddling\u201d an anti-immigration conspiracy theory called \u201cwhite replacement theory.\u201d Vance accused Ryan of\u00a0\u201cslander\u201d and called him \u201cdisgusting\u201d for those accusations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s exactly what happens when the media and people like Tim Ryan accuse me of engaging in great replacement theory,\u201d Vance said from the debate stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens is my own children \u2014 my biracial children \u2014 get attacked by scumbags online and in person, because you are so desperate for political power that you\u2019ll accuse me, the father of three beautiful biracial babies, of engaging in racism. We are sick of it,\u201d said Vance, whose wife is Indian American.<\/p>\n<p>Vance also defended his stance on immigration control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can believe in the border without being a racist,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In their earlier debate,\u00a0Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/10\/10\/us\/ohio-senate-debate-ryan-vance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attempted<\/a> to paint Vance as part of a fringe element, saying he is \u201crunning around with the election deniers, the extremists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vance responded that Ryan is focused on the wrong concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it interesting how preoccupied you are with this at a time when people can\u2019t afford groceries,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio Senate election is one of several closely watched Senate races this election cycle, including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, and\u00a0New Hampshire.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J.D.\u00a0Vance has taken the lead over his Democratic opponent in Ohio\u2019s Senate race since debating him earlier this month, according to the latest polling.
