Barrett has jurisdiction over the lower court that ruled on the case.<\/p>\n<p>The Brown County Taxpayers Association urged the court on Wednesday to block President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-joe-biden\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0national debt cancellation plan, saying it is illegal and encroaches on Congress\u2019s exclusive spending power.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. district judge in Wisconsin had previously ruled that the legal challenge lacked standing. A bid to halt the ruling while a formal appeal plays out was rejected by an intermediate appeals court. This prompted the failed Supreme Court appeal bid.<\/p>\n<p>With the lower court\u2019s order intact, student loan forgiveness of up to $20,000 per borrower could begin on Sunday.\u00a0The Congressional Budget Office has estimated it will cost about $400 billion over 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Biden announced the plan to cancel $10,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers earning under $125,000 annually and $20,000 for recipients of Pell grants, which help students from lower-income families.<\/p>\n<p>Borrowers\u00a0who have federal student loans owned by private entities and not by the Department of Education will no longer qualify for the relief program, according to an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/biden-admin-quietly-makes-reversal-on-student-loan-forgiveness-program-scales-back-eligibility_4765952.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">update<\/a>\u00a0on Sept. 29.<\/p>\n<p>The program will allow tens of millions of Americans to apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-student-loan-cancellation\">student loan cancellation<\/a>.\u00a0Borrowers have until Dec. 31, 2023, to submit an application.<\/p>\n<p>In their lawsuit, the\u00a0Brown County Taxpayers Association argued the White House lacks\u00a0the constitutional power or Congressional authorization to enact the program.<\/p>\n<h2>Over 8 Million Applications Received<\/h2>\n<p>Over\u00a08 million borrowers had already applied for loan forgiveness as of Monday through the beta version of the website, according to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/10\/17\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-student-debt-relief-portal-beta-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the launch of the official application site at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StudentAid.gov<\/a>\u00a0on Monday after a \u201cbeta\u201d test version of the site was rolled out over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, I\u2019m announcing millions of people, working and middle-class folks, can apply to get this relief. And it\u2019s simple and it\u2019s easy, it\u2019s fast,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll be able to fill out your name, Social Security number, date of birth, and contact information. No forms to upload. No special log-in to remember. It\u2019s available in English and in Spanish, on desktop and mobile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican-led states and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/another-lawsuit-filed-against-bidens-student-debt-relief-plan-arguing-move-is-inflationary_4788188.html?utm_source=ai&#038;utm_medium=search\">business groups<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/six-states-sue-biden-education-secretary-over-student-debt-cancellation_4764111.html\">filed lawsuits<\/a> against the $400 billion loan forgiveness plan, which comes amid soaring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-inflation\">inflation<\/a>.
