Version: 4.0.47--><p>TikTok responded to an explosive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/tiktoks-parent-company-in-china-planned-to-use-platform-to-track-locations-of-specific-americans-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> in Forbes that alleged that the company\u2019s Chinese parent company planned to use the platform to track the location of specific American citizens by claiming that the report was not accurate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForbes\u2019 reporting about TikTok continues to lack both rigor and journalistic integrity,\u201d the company claimed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TikTokComms\/status\/1583238906111459328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company claimed that they \u201cdisproved\u201d the report by telling Forbes that they do not collect the GPS locations from U.S. users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTikTok has never been used to \u2018target\u2019 any members of the U.S. government, activists, public figures or journalists, nor do we serve them a different content experience than other users,\u201d the company claimed. \u201cOur Internal Audit team follows set policies and processes to acquire information they need to conduct internal investigations of violations of the company codes of conduct, as is standard in companies across our industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forbes\u2019 report said that\u00a0ByteDance\u2019s Internal Audit and Risk Control department was the team responsible for the alleged plan to monitor the locations of specific American citizens.\u00a0The person who oversees that department is Beijing-based executive Song Ye, who reports to ByteDance co-founder and CEO Rubo Liang.<\/p>\n<p>The team is supposed to investigate alleged misconduct by current and former employees, but has allegedly in multiple instances \u201cplanned to collect TikTok data about the location of a U.S. citizen who had never had an employment relationship with the company,\u201d the report said, citing documents that Forbes viewed.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear whether the team collected the location and data of the targeted individuals, the report said, adding that the intended use of the data was to \u201csurveil individual American citizens, not to target ads or any of these other purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/president-biden-revokes-trumps-attempted-tiktok-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">far friendlier<\/a> to TikTok than former President Donald Trump, who repeatedly warned about the danger that the platform could pose to Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The story comes after lawyers for the company told U.S. lawmakers that in order for data on U.S. citizens to be accessed, only limited \u201cauthorized personnel\u201d would be allowed to under \u201cprotocols being developed with the U.S. Government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTikTok appears to remain \u2014 despite the claims of its US executives \u2014 beholden to its China-based leadership,\u201d Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner (D-VA) tweeted. \u201cWith each new report, there\u2019s further evidence that TikTok\u2019s claimed \u2018independence\u2019 is illusory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. James Comer (R-KY), Ranking Member on the House Oversight Committee, responded to the story by saying that it was \u201cclear TikTok is just the arm of the Chinese Communist Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c@GOPoversight\u00a0has pressed for clarification from the social media company on their data sharing practices,\u201d Comer said. \u201cAny failure to cooperate is a serious national security threat.
