RSV usually causes children to contract the usual mild-cold symptoms, but the impact could be much worse for those immunocompromised or with a heart defect.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe have observed a rise in RSV in multiple U.S. regions, and some regions are nearing seasonal peak levels,\u201d a CDC spokesperson told\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/surge-rsv-virus-fills-hospitals-can-severely-sicken-babies-rcna52082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NBC News<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dr. Juan Salazar, the physician-in-chief of Connecticut Children\u2019s Medical Center, told\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/3697459-childrens-hospitals-overflowing-with-respiratory-patients-consider-calling-national-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Hill\u00a0<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that cases began exponentially rising at the beginning of September, which he claims is something he has never seen before.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Young children with the virus have swamped the Hartford-based hospital, with staff debating whether to call in the U.S. National Guard and FEMA for support.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe just don\u2019t have as many critical care beds [for children] as we have adult critical care beds simply because we don\u2019t usually need them,\u201d Salazar said, according to The Hill.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Federal authorities would set up tents outside the hospital to assist with the capacity spreading the hospital staff thin.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Salazar said theories including herd immunity, immune suppression, and everyone catching the virus at the same time over the last couple of months have caused the emergency department to experience \u201cthe perfect storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cOur hospital was full,\u201d Salazar said. \u201cOur traditional pediatric in-patient beds \u2026 we have three floors with 25 beds in each location \u2014 we can expand to 28. All of those were full this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Hill reported Yale New Haven Children\u2019s Hospital emergency department saw RSV cases almost double last week from 57 to 106 admissions.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Washington Post\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/10\/20\/pediatrics-hospital-capacity-dc-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reported<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0several D.C.-area hospitals have also reached capacity for weeks.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Over 650 beds from three different hospitals \u2014 Children\u2019s National Hospital in Northwest D.C., Inova Fairfax in Northern Virginia, and the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore \u2014 have hit their limit this week.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are treating a very high number of severely ill children,\u201d Sarah Combs, an emergency medicine physician at Children\u2019s National, told The Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sofia Teferi, a MedStar Montgomery Medical Center pediatrician, told the outlet Wednesday she could not find an intensive care bed for a 4-month-old patient in the region.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe fact that you have to look at the parent and say your kid needs ICU-level care, but we have no bed for them: That\u2019s a very hard conversation to have,\u201d Teferi said. \u201cI\u2019m just floored by the whole thing \u2014 in the nation\u2019s capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eric Biondi, chief of pediatric hospital medicine at Johns Hopkins Children\u2019s Center, told the outlet Thursday that the hospital, which has over 120 beds, is \u201ccompletely full.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just a problem of how busy we are at Hopkins, which we are, but it flows out to the remote community emergency rooms that have to move kids,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NBC News\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/surge-rsv-virus-fills-hospitals-can-severely-sicken-babies-rcna52082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reported<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0hospitals in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Rhode Island have also seen an influx in RSV patients.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Hill reports that signs a child may have contracted RSV include changes in breathing, grunting noises, and chest caving with each breath.
