But DeSantis had his own warning for looters:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you, in the state of Florida, you never know what may be lurking behind somebody\u2019s home. I would not want to chance that if I were you, given that we\u2019re a Second Amendment state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And DeSantis wasn\u2019t alone. Florida\u2019s Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/weather\/florida-sheriff-pushes-hurricane-ian-victims-shoot-looters-look-grated-cheese\">also made headlines for his warning to criminals<\/a> looking to take advantage of the devastation wrought by Ian:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would highly suggest that if a looter breaks into your home, comes into your home while you\u2019re there to steal stuff, that you take your gun and you shoot him. You shoot him so that he looks like grated cheese. Because you know what? That\u2019s one looter that won\u2019t break into anyone else\u2019s home and take advantage of them when they\u2019re the most vulnerable and the most weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sound bites aside, what actually happens in these communities as they\u2019re rattled by looting and unrest? Just as we\u2019ve seen peaceable individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/4-times-an-armed-civilian-used-a-firearm-in-self-defense-last-month-alone\">commonly use firearms in everyday self-defense<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/5-times-a-lawfully-armed-citizen-stopped-a-would-be-mass-shooter-in-his-tracks\">to stop would-be<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/armed-peaceful-citizens-can-stop-mass-shootings-one-just-did-in-indiana\">mass shooters<\/a>, peaceable gun owners also regularly use firearms to defend their lives and livelihoods from destruction and looting after natural disasters and civil unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five such examples:<\/p>\n<p>1) Orlando Jewelry Store Owner Stops Would-Be Looters in the Wake of Hurricane Ian<\/p>\n<p>It takes a special kind of depravity to loot in the wake of a natural disaster. And yet, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/weather\/hurricane\/os-ne-hurricane-ian-tracking-lessons-learned-20221008-ghjpgjayobae5kauustz2xxqha-story.html\">Orlando recovers<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/realestate\/hurricane-ian-caused-24206-million-in-damage-in-orange-county\/ar-AA137l6H\">destruction of Hurricane Ian<\/a>, four criminals took the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox35orlando.com\/news\/2-shot-killed-trying-to-rob-jewelry-store-at-magic-mall-in-orlando-police-say\">target a jewelry store in Orlando\u2019s Magic Mall<\/a> and attempted to \u2018smash and grab\u2019 the store.<\/p>\n<p>The store owner, however, was armed. When the four entered, the owner opened fire, striking at least two. One was found dead at the store, the other three got into a car and fled. Police later found the car abandoned, and one more would-be looter dead.<\/p>\n<p>Another store owner in the Magic Mall had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox35orlando.com\/news\/magic-mall-store-owners-warning-for-criminals-theres-a-really-good-chance-youre-gonna-get-shot\">this warning<\/a>: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of concealed license carriers here. So if you come to the Magic Mall and you want to commit a crime, there\u2019s a really good chance you\u2019re gonna get shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2) Scottsdale, Arizona, Jewelry Store Owners Stop Vandals in their Tracks<\/p>\n<p>In May 2020, Scottsdale, Arizona, was one of the many cities across the United States to experience violent unrest in the wake of the death of George Floyd. But some Arizonans wouldn\u2019t allow their livelihoods to be destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing criminals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.12news.com\/article\/news\/local\/valley\/scottsdale-fashion-square-closes-as-phoenix-prepares-for-more-protests\/75-d1895901-0c67-4b60-9064-3df758805f16\">break in and loot the Scottsdale Fashion Square mall<\/a> the evening prior, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.12news.com\/article\/news\/local\/valley\/business-owner-defends-store-during-scottsdale-looting\/75-785f1952-bf9f-4899-84e3-6b66f7f51643\">several members of the community armed themselves<\/a> to protect a local jewelry store from suffering the same fate.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, that evening, they watched protesters march down Scottsdale\u2019s 5th Avenue, destroying stores and storefronts along the way.<\/p>\n<p>When the vandals reached the well-protected jewelry store, they were stopped in their tracks. The protesters seemingly decided it wasn\u2019t in their best interest to damage this particular store, and instead staged a performative protest in front of it. The store suffered no damage, and no one was harmed.<\/p>\n<p>The store owner\u2019s son spoke out: \u201cWe weren\u2019t here to hurt anybody. We weren\u2019t here to harm anybody. After seeing exactly what happened to the Apple store, this isn\u2019t protesting, this isn\u2019t rioting, this is crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3) Philadelphia Gun Store Owner Shoots and Kills Would-Be Looter<\/p>\n<p>Just days after the Scottsdale incident, one would-be Philadelphia looter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/south-philly-gun-shop-owner-shoots-kills-looter-police-say\/2416373\/\">didn\u2019t walk away from his attempt to loot a local gun store<\/a>. Gregory Isabella, the 67-year-old owner of a gun store in South Philadelphia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/philadelphia-protests-looting-gun-store-south-philly-shot-dead-20200602.html&#038;outputType=app-web-view\">spent the night in his store<\/a> because of multiple break-in attempts over the past few nights.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Gregory was monitoring security camera footage and saw a group of men use bolt cutters to cut a lock off the store\u2019s gate. They smashed in the back door and went upstairs, where they encountered the armed owner.<\/p>\n<p>One pointed a handgun at Gregory, and Gregory opened fire, striking and killing one criminal and sending the others running. Not only did Gregory protect his life and livelihood, but he also prevented the would-be looters from terrorizing his community with stolen firearms.<\/p>\n<p>4) Texas Looters Choose the Wrong Neighborhood to Loot After Hurricane Harvey<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, after Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc across Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-weather\/hurricaneharvey\/article\/Hurricane-Harvey-looters-viral-video-John-Nash-12165416.php\">a group of looters targeted the Little York Food Mart in Harris County<\/a>, just north of Houston.
