This after a San Francisco Chronicle columnist called out the &#8220;mind-boggling&#8221; and &#8220;maddening&#8221; details of the project.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/california-legalizes-human-composting-burials\">California<\/a> Assemblyman Matt Haney who secured the $1.7 million funding from the state to install the toilet, told the outlet that he now considers the price tag &#8220;inexplicable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Haney told the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/bayarea\/heatherknight\/article\/Celebration-for-S-F-s-1-7-million-toilet-17520998.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>, &#8220;When Rec and Park first told us the number, it sounded shockingly high to me. I\u2019m glad that Noe Valley will at some point get a bathroom, but it shouldn\u2019t cost this much, and it shouldn\u2019t take this long, and I\u2019m angry about it. \u2026 It\u2019s not something I want to celebrate right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the city\u2019s Recreation and Parks Department told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/san-francisco-building-public-toilet-1-7-million-completed-2025\">Fox News<\/a> that the ridiculously high cost was due to &#8220;onerous demands and unpredictable costs levied by PG&#038;E.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, construction costs of not only materials but employees have skyrocketed 20 to 30 percent in the last two years. A spokesperson told the outlet, &#8220;It\u2019s also important to note that public projects and their overall cost estimates don\u2019t just reflect the price of erecting structures.\u00a0They include the cost of planning, drawing, permits, reviews, public outreach, and construction management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/san-francisco-homelessness-crisis-increases-despite-1-1-billion-in-spending\">San Francisco<\/a> is one of the most expensive cities in the world to build in. However, aside from inflation and supply chain issues, the San Francisco plaza already has plumbing and will need planning, permitting reviews, and public outreach.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Chronicle, after an architect draws plans for the toilet, it will be presented to the public for feedback.<\/p>\n<p>The Arts Commission\u2019s Civic Design Review committee will then conduct a \u201cmulti-phase review\u201d of the project to \u201censures that each project\u2019s design is appropriate to its context in the urban environment, and that structures of the highest design quality reflect their civic stature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project will then be subject to review under the California Environmental Quality Act before it is put out to bid and will be built by union workers who will \u201cearn a living wage and benefits,\u201d according to a joint statement from the Rec and Parks Department and the Department of Public Works. The departments added in the statement, \u201cWhile this isn\u2019t the cheapest way to build, it reflects San Francisco\u2019s values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the toilet is actually completed in 2025, and the cost is less than the $1.7 million price tag, and if so the remaining funds will be allocated towards maintenance and upgrades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haney added that his constituents have been requesting a public toilet since 2016 when the town square opened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Feces on San Francisco&#8217;s streets, in parks, and in other public areas\u00a0have been a hot-button political topic and a source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/SnapCrap-app-San-Francisco-poop-feces-dirty-street-13281837.php\">national mockery<\/a> for years.
