About a third of the early votes recorded so far have been cast in Florida alone, as more than 600,000 in the Sunshine State have cast ballots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that we are above the 2018 midterm at the same point in time in states where we have comparable data to look at,\u201d Michael McDonald, a professor at the University of Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/national-early-vote-counts-hit-million-surpassing-ordinary\/story?id=91620263\">told<\/a> ABC News. \u201cWe can see the sorts of indicators that would suggest that we\u2019re in for a high-turnout election, much like we had in 2018. And 2018 was the highest midterm turnout rate since 1914.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida, which has a Republican governor and a Republican-controlled legislature, is leading the way so far, the data shows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuite remarkable \u2026 considering that early voting is going on in many other states,\u201d McDonald told ABC News. \u201cFlorida has been piling on another 100,000 every day, at this point. Florida\u2019s really why the numbers have moved so quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Florida Leads<\/h2>\n<p>Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last week signed an executive order that allows Hurricane Ian-hit areas more flexibility to request and cast ballots, including adding three days of early voting and rescinding certain voting requirements in several western coastal counties.<\/p>\n<p>During an event on Saturday, DeSantis encouraged people to vote by mail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I would say is whatever you like is fine. We\u2019ve got good returns on absentee, and I have confidence in early voting, in person [voting], and of course Election day [voting],\u201d the Republican governor said.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2006 and 2018, in-person voting on Election Day decreased by about 20 percent\u2014from 80 percent to 60 percent, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/early-person-voting-strong-option-concerned-voters\/story?id=72248475\">according to research<\/a>, with voters increasingly favoring early mail-in voting and early in-person voting.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald said that recent trends in midterm voting might be a sign of things to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re observing here is that some people have changed their behavior.
