Now the Critics Choice Association is one-upping themselves with a new initiative they\u2019ve dubbed the SOFEE.<\/p>\n<p>SOFEE stands for \u2018Seal of Female Empowerment in Entertainment\u2019 and it\u2019s exactly what it sounds like. A press release <a href=\"https:\/\/www.criticschoice.com\/2022\/09\/20\/the-critics-choice-association-womens-committee-launches-the-seal-of-female-empowerment-in-entertainment-sofee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describes<\/a> how this honor \u201crecognizes outstanding new films and television series that illuminate the female experience and perspective through authentically told female-driven stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further, \u201cqualifying projects will have a prominent female character arc, give female characters at least equal screen time to male characters, have female leaders behind the scenes, and pass elements highlighted in the Bechdel test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first proud recipients of SOFEES were the woke-ified TV version of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/a-league-of-their-own-reboot-embraces-queer-culture-and-modern-gender-theory-gets-panned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A League of Their Own<\/a>,\u201d the historically inaccurate film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-woman-king-falsely-paints-female-warrior-slave-traders-as-abolitionists-even-leftist-critics-admit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Woman King<\/a>,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/hillary-clinton-gushing-to-megan-thee-stallion-over-wap-has-twitter-recalling-the-hot-sauce-fiasco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hillary Clinton\u2019s interview series, \u201cGutsy<\/a>.\u201d All three earned perfect scores when they were measured against the numerical scoring system.<\/p>\n<p>Well, then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last five years have seen a dramatic shift where women are being given significantly more opportunity to create large-scale entertainment,\u201d Tara McNamara, chair of the CCA Women\u2019s Committee said of the award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result is that half of the population is seeing truer representation on the screen. As the most influential critics organization, we believe it\u2019s the role of the CCA to recognize studios and filmmakers making positive female-forward entertainment with an easy-to-spot seal graphic \u2014 perfect for a movie poster or TV ad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is that those who care about how women are depicted on screen and utilized behind the scenes will look for the SOFEE graphic to help inform their media consumption decisions,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s only one problem with SOFEES: each \u201cperfect\u201d entertainment piece they\u2019ve awarded with the honor is objectively terrible.<\/p>\n<p>Take \u201cThe Woman King,\u201d for example. Even some leftist reviewers were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-woman-king-falsely-paints-female-warrior-slave-traders-as-abolitionists-even-leftist-critics-admit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced to admit<\/a> that the film literally rewrote history to make the Agojie warrior women look like abolitionists. In real life, they were happily profiting from the African slave trade and had no interest in losing that revenue stream.<\/p>\n<p>The reviewer from The New Yorker made note of this historical error. \u201cIf the scriptwriters had wanted, \u2018The Woman King\u2019 could have been an amoral epic about swordplay and statecraft,\u201d the reviewer shared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut \u2018The Woman King\u2019 chooses to make resistance to slavery its moral compass, then misrepresents a kingdom that trafficked tens of thousands as a vanguard in the struggle against it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal also noted how it was all a farce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe central problem with the movie\u2014call it the #MeToo \u2018Black Panther\u2019\u2014is that in reality Dahomey notoriously built its wealth on capturing local people and selling them into slavery,\u201d the reviewer said of the film. \u201cCharacters in \u2018The Woman King\u2019 blame enslavement in Dahomey on the economic meddling of white traders although it was well-established in West Africa before the Europeans got involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Woman King\u201d featured strong female characters and was directed by a woman, but when it came to actual substance, it lacked historical accuracy for the sake of extra woke-ness. The abysmal remake of the classic 1992 drama \u201cA League of Their Own\u201d wasn\u2019t much better.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Amazon Prime series debuted, co-director Will Graham bragged about how progressive it was going to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a much bigger story there that wasn\u2019t just about a team, but that was really about a whole generation,\u201d Graham said at the Tribeca Film Festival. \u201cThat\u2019s a big part of why we wanted to make it. It was just this feeling of\u2014especially with queer stories, women of color\u2014having a story that\u2019s really centered on joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He delivered on that promise. Dave Nemetz from TV Line said the new \u201cA League of Their Own\u201d made a \u201cnoble effort\u201d but that the series was \u201ca little too eager to make its point, sidelining the baseball elements and getting bogged down in heavy-handed subplots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nemetz called the addition of the lesbian romance to the plot, \u201csoppy and predictable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may not have seen anything this explicitly gay in the original movie, but we\u2019ve definitely seen LGBTQ storylines like this many times before,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>While most critics and audiences loved the new \u201cA League of Their Own,\u201d according to Rotten Tomatoes, it\u2019s worth noting who exactly was watching it in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is prestige lesbian television,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/editorial.out.com\/television\/2022\/8\/17\/league-their-own-prestige-lesbian-television-its-finest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reviewer<\/a> from Out Magazine shared. \u201cA League of Their Own features some of the best writing and directing on TV this year.
