People were told they were just as racist as in the days of slavery and segregation and that we must defund the police, pay reparations, and impose endless racial quotas and preferences.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/columnists\/ohio-drug-crisis-senate-race-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OHIO&#8217;S DRUG CRISIS LOOMS LARGE IN ITS SENATE RACE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see how voters\u2019 response is developing.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans regain lead in generic vote for the House. In an era of straight-ticket voting, party support in congressional elections is a good benchmark. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/2022-generic-congressional-vote-7361.html\">The <\/a><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/2022-generic-congressional-vote-7361.html\">Real Clear Politics<\/a><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/2022-generic-congressional-vote-7361.html\"> average<\/a> showed Republicans ahead by about 3 points from last November to June. The developments \u2014 President Joe Biden&#8217;s legislative successes, the Dobbs decision, the restoration of jobs \u2014 appeared to reduce Republicans\u2019 lead in August and September.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks ago, Republicans seized the lead and are ahead now by <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/SteveKornacki\/status\/1582006833061195776\">slightly more than in 2014<\/a>, when they won more House seats (247 of 435) than <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/history.house.gov\/Institution\/Party-Divisions\/Party-Divisions\/\">in any election since the 1920s<\/a>. Polls focused on likely voters showed Republicans ahead, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/2022-generic-congressional-vote-7361.html\">48% to 45%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentals have taken hold: out-of-control inflation, sparked by first President Donald Trump and then even more by Biden spending to compensate for COVID closedown losses; out-of-control crime, sparked by liberals\u2019 defunding and deactivation of police forces and no-bail and quick-release of criminals. Liberal crime policies are hugely unpopular. Racial quotas and preferences in college admissions, the subject of a Supreme Court case on colleges to be argued on Oct. 31, are opposed by 74% in a Pew Research poll, and quotas have been voted down in eight of nine referenda since 1996, most recently in California in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Trump-fixation is past its sell-by date. Immigration was one issue on which the sole rationale for Democrats\u2019 policy was Orange Man Bad. If Trump would build a wall and force asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico, Biden would let everyone in. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/16\/opinion\/warnock-herschel-walker-debate.html?smid=url-share\">As <\/a><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/16\/opinion\/warnock-herschel-walker-debate.html?smid=url-share\">New York Times<\/a><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/16\/opinion\/warnock-herschel-walker-debate.html?smid=url-share\"> reporter Frank Bruni notes<\/a>, focusing on Biden rather than Trump \u201cdoesn\u2019t exactly track with media coverage of the midterms.\u201d Voters, in contrast, except for Democratic activists who are, in my colleague David Freddoso\u2019s words, \u201c<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/obama-is-right-democrats-anti-trump-fixation-is-killing-them\">obsessed with Trump to the point of insanity<\/a>,\u201d are focused on the current rather than the former president.<\/p>\n<p>Hispanics trending Republican. Although most news media try to suppress the story, Democrats are also suffering from out-of-control illegal immigration, highlighted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019s flying immigrants to Martha\u2019s Vineyard.
