The digital interface has become a part of him. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tIRxtewucH4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC interview<\/a>, Fetterman can be seen gazing at his desktop screen, struggling to comprehend the questions asked. The Democratic nominee will even be allowed to use this software in the Oct. 25 debate with his Republican opponent, Dr. Mehmet Oz.<\/p>\n<p>In a healthy society, Fetterman\u2019s own party would urge him to resign for the common good. This situation is beyond the polarized arguments over immigration, crime, or nuclear war. Cognitive fitness is crucial for political leaders. Their job is to engage the public, project competency abroad, and go toe-to-toe with rivals. But we do not live in a healthy society.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than acknowledge the danger of electing a U.S. senator who, tragically, has been forced to merge with a machine, Fetterman\u2019s supporters are <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2022\/10\/14\/fetterman-interview-nbc-ableist-disability-advocates-closed-captions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">framing this<\/a> as an \u201cequity\u201d issue. The normal desire to have leaders of sound mind and body is being <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/john-fettermans-attacks-on-health-disability-and-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denounced<\/a> as \u201cableism\u201d \u2014 i.e., the expectation that people are able to do their jobs. In a culture that rewards virtue-signaling, even compromised cognition is exalted as a virtue.<\/p>\n<p>Our new normal is not inclusive of MAGA or the unvaccinated, but it undoubtedly includes cyborgs. And now, riding a wave of \u201cdiversity and inclusion,\u201d Fetterman is America\u2019s first official cyborg candidate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor transhumanists,\u201d Tucker Carlson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P02vdZlDJ6U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> last week, \u201cthis is Neil Armstrong on the moon. Here you have one of the most famous politicians in the country merging with a computer.\u201d Anyone familiar with the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/-\/media\/policy\/projects\/ihuman\/report-neural-interfaces.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">serious conversations<\/a> around <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/986301\/Human_Augmentation_SIP_access2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human augmentation<\/a> knows Carlson is correct. It\u2019s becoming the <a href=\"https:\/\/horizons.gc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Biodigital-Convergence-with-Links-Final-02062020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">central issue<\/a> of our time, and we must grapple with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/content\/dam\/rand\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR3200\/RR3226\/RAND_RR3226.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefits and dangers<\/a> in a serious manner.<\/p>\n<p>Klaus Schwab, chairman of the World Economic Forum, calls this global transformation the Fourth Industrial Revolution \u2014 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t1SpC3B1KyM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the fusion of our physical, our digital, and our biological identities<\/a>.\u201d His 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/the-fourth-industrial-revolution-klaus-schwab\/10229145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book<\/a> by that title identifies cochlear implants as a forerunner to an implanted brain-computer interface, casually described as a \u201c\u2018built-in\u2019 smartphone.\u201d What begins with healing is expected to become enhancement.<\/p>\n<p> A Public Illustration of Digitization <\/p>\n<p>Fetterman is a public illustration of this digitization process \u2014 both its advantages and its limitations. Supporters argue that a senator using a computer to communicate should be accepted as normal. His use of digital assistance is being defended as ordinary \u201cclosed captioning.\u201d This is disingenuous. Unlike people with hearing loss, Fetterman suffers from something far more serious.<\/p>\n<p>Aphasia \u2014 the neurological inability to process speech \u2014 is not a mere sensory disorder. It\u2019s a debilitating processing issue. In Fetterman\u2019s case, this problem is compounded by difficulty speaking and maintaining a steady train of thought. One wonders how he would endure the pressure of the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians are natural targets for cruel commentary. Their looks, their gaffes, their scandals \u2014 these are all fair game in the public square.
