It\u2019s a teaser for the actor\u2019s upcoming memoir, \u201cFriends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again,\u201d he told the publication for their cover story. \u201cI had to wait until I was pretty safely sober \u2014 and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction \u2014 to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book begins by describing Perry\u2019s near-death experience a few years ago after his colon burst from opioid abuse. He spent weeks in a coma and then had to use a colostomy bag for nine months, the publication reported.<\/p>\n<p>Perry said, \u201cthe doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that\u2019s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>The actor also recalled his time on the hit comedy \u201cFriends\u201d and how the fame affected him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could handle it, kind of. But by the time I was 34, I was really entrenched in a lot of trouble,\u201d he said. \u201cBut there were years that I was sober during that time. Season 9 was the year that I was sober the whole way through. And guess which season I got nominated for best actor? I was like, \u2018That should tell me something.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perry also told People that while on the show, he took 55 Vicodin pills per day, and his weight dropped to 128 pounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know how to stop,\u201d the actor said. \u201cIf the police came over to my house and said, \u2018If you drink tonight, we\u2019re going to take you to jail,\u2019 I\u2019d start packing. I couldn\u2019t stop because the disease and the addiction is progressive. So it gets worse and worse as you grow older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the actor explained that he was ready to talk about the details now because he is in a much better place. Perry didn\u2019t want to disclose how long he\u2019s been sober, but he described himself as \u201cpretty healthy\u201d right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got to not go to the gym much more, because I don\u2019t want to only be able to play superheroes,\u201d he told the publication. \u201cBut no, I\u2019m a pretty healthy guy right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perry also said a big reason for him avoiding drugs now is fear of the potential health repercussions. \u201cMy therapist said, \u2018The next time you think about taking Oxycontin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life,&#8217;\u201d the actor said. \u201cAnd a little window opened and I crawled through it and I no longer want Oxycontin anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perry\u2019s memoir \u201cFriends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing\u201d is out November 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cFriends\u201d actor Matthew Perry is frankly discussing his previous battle with addiction, including some of the more graphic medical details from over the years.
