One silver lining to the Covid pandemic is that it lifted the veil of the public health bureaucracy, behind which lies a bloated, unaccountable, and opulent industry comprised of public health \u201cexperts,\u201d Big Pharma, insurance companies, and large hospital corporations. But this problem presents us with a world of opportunity through its very simple solution: health care freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with how we got into this mess. Our health care system has evolved into an insurance-run, government-dictated bureaucratic racket that creates problems <em>funded<\/em> by the government and <em>paid for<\/em> with your tax dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the American medical industry \u2014 built on cornerstones of a strong personal relationship between doctor and patient, the incentive of free enterprise, and freedom of choice \u2014 has propelled world-changing innovations and provided the best medical care on Earth. Yet today, this system prevents Americans from accessing the very medical miracles it offers by jacking up prices for care that \u201cinsurance\u201d plans won\u2019t cover.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not because the Big Health Care corporatists just woke up one morning and decided to put health care out of reach. It\u2019s because years of government regulation and the concentration of power into the hands of large corporations have marginalized doctors and patients. Setting aside the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965, at least 10 major federal health care bills were signed into law between 1982 and 2010.\u00a0These \u201creforms\u201d imposed massive regulations on our health care system, creating an alphabet soup of government constraints \u2014 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/congressional-report\/104th-congress\/house-report\/76\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UMRA<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/104th-congress\/house-bill\/3103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIPAA<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/congressional-record\/congressional-record-index\/108th-congress\/1st-session\/emergency-medical-treatment-and-labor-emtala-act\/164309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EMTALA<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/99th-congress\/house-bill\/3128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COBRA<\/a> \u2014 that have been squeezing out innovation and competition for years.<\/p>\n<p> Most Americans Are Paying More for Health Care <\/p>\n<p>The so-called \u201cAffordable\u201d Care Act (ACA or Obamacare), passed in 2010, doubled down on the dysfunction in the name of \u201ccovering people\u201d by offering insurance companies (as well as hospitals, Big Pharma, and other middlemen) billions of dollars every year to \u201cinsure\u201d Americans to the government\u2019s specifications. And though politicians sold the American people \u201caffordable\u201d health care, the truth is that those subsidies only resulted in a small minority of Americans paying less. Most Americans paid more, and they continue to do so. The result is a crony system that works for everyone <em>except<\/em> patients and doctors.<\/p>\n<p>The government incentivizes hospitals to increase prices (<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/healthcare\/3488399-hospitals-push-for-higher-prices-while-hiding-real-rates-from-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using opaque agreements<\/a>) because they can rely on insurance to pay them out, and because insurance receives a steady flow of government cash, they too <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-reform\/press-release\/marketplace-insurers-are-proposing-10-premium-hikes-for-2023-in-13-states-and-dc-though-many-enrollees-could-face-much-higher-increases-if-congress-doesnt-extend-enhanced-tax-credits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase their premiums<\/a> to account for the artificially inflated \u201chigh cost\u201d of health care. This corporate cronyism system also hikes up your drug costs. Pharma companies list prices high because they know insurance companies will pay the cost \u2014 the higher the price, the higher the payout, the higher the profit. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2021\/06\/15\/drug-rebates-for-insurers-tied-to-higher-costs-for-patients-especially-the-uninsured\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefits insurance companies<\/a>,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the past year, health insurance premiums have skyrocketed more than 24 percent \u2014 the highest recorded one-year increase.
