There were 822 violations.<\/p>\n<p>Each violation can bring a fine of up to $10,000, but that amount can be tripled because of the finding that the violations were intentional. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-ferguson-seeks-maximum-246m-penalty-against-facebook-parent-meta#:~:text=AG%20Ferguson%20seeks%20maximum%20%2424.6M%20penalty%20against%20Facebook%20parent%20Meta,-FOR%20IMMEDIATE%20RELEASE&#038;text=OLYMPIA%20%E2%80%94%20Attorney%20General%20Bob%20Ferguson,Washington&#039;s%20campaign%20finance%20transparency%20law\">delete<\/a>]\n<p>Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23166888-ferguson-motion\">urged North<\/a> to impose the maximum financial penalty, noting Meta\u2019s history of not complying with the law.<\/p>\n<p>A previous case ended in a stipulated judgment that saw Meta pay a $200,000 civil penalty and $38,500 in fees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite this penalty, awareness of the Law\u2019s requirements, and having been given a clean slate, Meta continued intentionally violating the Law from the instant the judgment in the first case was entered,\u201d Ferguson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeta has never provided all required information in response to any request, and in the instances where Meta provided some information beyond what is publicly available in the Ad Library, Meta\u2019s response often took weeks or months and included redactions Meta intentionally made to obscure required\u00a0information from its response to requests,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The intentional violations come despite Meta lawyers being well-versed in campaign finance law and the company raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars from campaigns in Washington state alone since December 2018, the filing says.<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson asked for a $24.6 million penalty to be assessed, as well as a yet-to-be-determined fee for state lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have penalties for a reason,\u201d Ferguson said in a statement. \u201cFacebook is a repeat, intentional violator of the law. It\u2019s a sophisticated company. Instead of accepting responsibility and apologizing for its conduct, Facebook went to court to gut our campaign finance law in order to avoid accountability. If this case doesn\u2019t warrant a maximum penalty, what does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>A motion on the hearing is scheduled for later in October.<\/p>\n<p>In previous court filings and oral arguments, Meta has alleged that the law itself is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Honor, in 49 other states, interests of electoral transparency and integrity are typically served by imposing disclosure requirements on the political speakers, not on the platforms that those speakers use.
