In addition, bathroom and locker room use is to be based on students\u2019 sex, defined as the biological sex at birth. Student sports participation will also be sex-based, unless federal laws require otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>The new policies are a reversal of the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/equalityvirginia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Transgender-Student-Model-Policies-March-2021-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines<\/a> implemented under the former governor, Democrat Ralph Northam. Those rules, which define transgender as a student\u2019s \u201cself-identifying term,\u201d ask schools to consider not disclosing a student\u2019s gender identity to the parents \u201cif a student is not ready or able to safely share\u201d it with their family.<\/p>\n<p>The self-described \u201cqueer\u201d special education teacher told the school board attendees, \u201cI found that autistic students, the population I work with, may experience gender queerness more than other students,\u201d in a clip that went viral on Twitter on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Children and adolescents on the autism spectrum are disproportionately represented among the large, newly emerging cohort of children claiming to be transgender. Over the past 10 years, there have been at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zhanavrangalova\/2017\/11\/15\/growing-evidence-for-a-link-between-gender-dysphoria-and-autism-spectrum-disorders\/?sh=6e3f4479153e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nine studies<\/a> connecting Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and transgender identities. Rates of autistic traits in these studies range from five percent to 54% among those with gender dysphoria, significantly higher than among the general population.<\/p>\n<p>Some researchers believe the percentage of young girls with autism who believe they\u2019re experiencing gender dysphoria is actually higher, and that many of these females go undiagnosed. Up until recently, autism was considered a \u201cboy\u2019s diagnosis,\u201d affecting males-to-females by a ratio of 4:1. Experts now believe that girls\u2019 autistic traits present differently, which may require a separate diagnostic criteria to detect. <\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35204992\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in Children in 2022 used a mathematical model to predict the true male-to-female ratio, which they estimated as being closer to 3:4. The study notes, \u201cEighty percent of females remain undiagnosed at age 18, which has serious consequences for the mental health of young women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kenneth Zucker, a psychologist with 30 years of experience running the largest Canadian childhood gender clinic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/psychologist-do-transgender-children-just-have-amanda-prestigiacomo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believes<\/a> that many children identifying as transgender may do so because they are on the autism spectrum.
