W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and the 106th Congress, Americans should also take heed. For we have not only failed to \u201cconvert\u201d China from communist authoritarianism to the ways of a democratic society, as we had hoped, but also we have made our own society more authoritarian in a manner that mimics some aspects of China.<\/p>\n<p> A Private-Sector Silencing of Speech <\/p>\n<p>John Locke, the 17th-century philosopher who so influenced the Founders,<a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.mcmaster.ca\/econ\/ugcm\/3ll3\/locke\/toleration.pdf\"> wrote in \u201cA Letter Concerning Toleration\u201d:\u00a0<\/a>\u201cThe toleration of those that differ from others is so agreeable \u2026 to the genuine reason of mankind, that it seems monstrous for men to be so blind as not to perceive the necessity and advantage of it in so clear a light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Locke was writing about religious tolerance among different sects, his notions were so embraced by the Founding Fathers that they became the basis for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/first-amendment\/article\/1220\/james-madison#:~:text=%22The%20people%20shall%20not%20be,of%20liberty%2C%20shall%20be%20inviolable.\">James <\/a>Madison\u2019s\u00a0derivation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-1\/#:~:text=Congress%20shall%20make%20no%20law,for%20a%20redress%20of%20grievances.\">First Amendment<\/a> that prohibits Congress from abridging the freedom of speech or the press.<\/p>\n<p>Today, though, tolerance of speech is at risk. And it is private sector corporations that are limiting speech in ways Congress cannot\u2014and ways the Founders likely never considered.<\/p>\n<p>As I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/users-reject-paypals-attempt-to-limit-speech-they-should_4784362.html?utm_source=ref_share&#038;utm_campaign=copy&#038;rs=SHRRZKXW\">reported<\/a> earlier this month, private company PayPal maintains a policy that allows the company to debit $2,500 from accounts of users who\u00a0promote \u201chate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory.\u201d Your account can be closed if you \u201cprovide false, inaccurate, or misleading information.\u201d Determinations as to whether you meet those thresholds are, of course, made solely by PayPal.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Mike Lindell, the \u201cMy Pillow Guy,\u201d had bank accounts he maintained with Minnesota Bank &#038; Trust terminated after the bank described him as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/mypillow-ceo-mike-lindells-bank-cuts-ties-with-him-2022-2#:~:text=Lindell%20told%20Insider%20he%20had,platform%20for%20people%20with%20addiction.\">reputation risk.<\/a>\u201d The bank apparently found Lindell\u2019s continuing doubts about the integrity of the 2020 election to somehow be a threat to it.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren Witzke, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Delaware and a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/laurenwitzkeofficial\/?hl=en\"> self-described<\/a> \u201cChristian nationalist\u201d who opposes the LGBTQ movement, was denied access to her account at Wells Fargo. She <a href=\"https:\/\/norfolkdailynews.com\/commentary\/financial-censorship-of-usa-first\/article_c432875a-d9a6-11eb-b0e1-eb825545cda4.html\">claims<\/a> she had banked with Wells Fargo for years but only had banking services denied when she became a candidate and had a platform to espouse her views.<\/p>\n<p>These \u201cblackballings\u201d of opposing speech by financial institutions all seem to go against conservative groups. Left-wing groups like Antifa and Black Lives Matter don\u2019t seem to have been sanctioned by financial institutions, even though they have been accused of engaging in violence.
