However, amid facing calls to vacate their seats, both councilors have refused to leave. Instead, O\u2019Farrell striped the city officials of their chairmanships and committee positions that deal with issues such as real estate, development, housing, and homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only recourse is resignation or recall,\u201d O\u2019Farrell told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-10-17\/la-city-council-ofarrell-cedillo-deleon\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a>. \u201cI do not see the remaining two members who haven\u2019t resigned coming back to council with any level of credibility whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heard in the audio recordings with Martinez, Cedillo, and de Le\u00f3n was Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, who resigned from his position last week shortly after Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>During the closed-door recorded conversation, L.A. officials met to discuss how the city would redraw council district boundaries over the next ten years \u2014 geared toward helping Latino political leaders maintain their power, re-elect Latino members, and protect economic interests.<\/p>\n<p>However, the leaked audio recordings, first published by anonymous Reddit users and later reported by The Los Angeles Times, exposed Martinez\u2019s racist statements about a fellow council member Mike Bonin, a gay white man, and his adopted black son.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez also made remarks about Oaxacan immigrants living in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles and offensive comments regarding Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s association with the black community.<\/p>\n<p>Councilmember de Le\u00f3n made offensive comments in the recording about Bonin.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Farrell said he urged De Le\u00f3n Monday morning to resign but has not received a response from the councilor since last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made it really clear he absolutely should not attend any future council meetings,\u201d O\u2019Farrell said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/10\/17\/los-angeles-city-council-members-cut-committees\">Axios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Farrell said he also spoke with Cedillo last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt that he was reconciling his feelings about this transgression and understood the gravity of the moment,\u201d O\u2019Farrell said, adding that Cedillo would not make an appearance at the council.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Times report de Le\u00f3n and Cedillo have expressed an apology or regret for their involvement.<\/p>\n<p>While Cedillo said he \u201cshould have intervened\u201d when his colleagues used \u201cracially divisive\u201d language, De Le\u00f3n said he regrets \u201cappearing to condone and even contribute to certain insensitive comments made about a colleague and his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mission, and my duty, is to help this city heal and to keep it moving forward so that we can all move on from this terrible time,\u201d O\u2019Farrell added.<\/p>\n<p>With LA City Council\u2019s house of cards crumbling, city officials are expected to elect a new president Tuesday, which O\u2019Farrell has reportedly said he does not want to hold.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acting Los Angeles City Council President Mitch O\u2019Farrell removed Councilmembers Kevin de Le\u00f3n and Gil Cedillo from committee positions and assignments on Monday following leaked audio recordings that revealed incriminating allegations of corruption and racism within the chambers.
