The number is 2% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomatonews.com\/en\/california-2022-processing-tomato-production-revised-at-9525-million-mt_2_1757.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lower<\/a> than last year\u2019s number and 10% under the number forecasted in May. The anticipated production amount also continued to go down as the season went on, and crops that were planted early were harmed by frost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The global production estimate is almost 3 million tons less than projections from March, according to Tomato News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomatonews.com\/en\/wptc-crop-update-as-of-30-september-2022_2_1783.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reporting<\/a> of the World Processing Tomato Council\u2019s crop data as of the end of September. The outlet noted, however, that the final number is expected to be even less because California\u2019s tomato output will likely be even lower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Low water and intense summer heat have made a difficult environment for farmers, creating issues for them to meet the need for the crop. The Processing Tomato Advisory Board\u2019s shipment numbers reportedly revealed a 5% drop through August 27, 2022 when contrasted with the end of August last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The low tomato yield could impact what customers see on grocery shelves and in restaurants, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/10\/10\/california-drought-tomato-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost<\/a> of such items.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNinety-five percent of the processed tomato products consumed in the United States come right here from California\u2019s Central Valley,\u201d\u00a0Mike Montna, president and CEO of the California Tomato Growers Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/17\/us\/california-drought-tomato-farmers-climate\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> CNN. \u201cMainly the tomatoes from the growers that I represent \u2026 go to your ketchups, pizza sauces, your retail sauces that you see at the supermarket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to end up ultimately somewhere around 10.5, 10.4 million tons,\u201d Montna noted, estimating that amount will be around 14% less than annual numbers forecasted early on. \u201cWe\u2019re not getting the yields that we expected or that we got historically seven or eight years ago. We\u2019re in a flat to declining yield situation and a lot of it\u2019s due to weather and how intensive it is to grow a tomato.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Montna said this is the least amount of tomatoes the industry has ever garnered, after there was a lot of need for tomato items during the pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/u-s-restaurants-are-facing-a-ketchup-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Last April,<\/a> there was a shortage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-new-shortage-ketchup-cant-catch-up-11617645189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ketchup<\/a> as restaurants had tried to secure packets of the condiment during COVID.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Aaron Barcellos, a farmer, told CNN that his family reduced the amount of land used to grow tomatoes this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s just like owning a second home and trying to rent it out,\u201d Barcellos said of his empty acres. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have a tenant in there, you still have all your fixed costs \u2026 but you have no income coming from it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The California tomato crop is hurting after a devastating drought and economic policies continue to plague California farmers.
