Addressing the \u201celephant in the room\u201d at the trial, Durham made it clear that he believed the FBI had botched up its <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/russia-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump-Russia investigation<\/a> but that lies told to the bureau about British ex-spy Christopher Steele\u2019s dossier still mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Durham said that \u201cthe FBI mishandled the investigation at issue\u201d and that \u201cthe FBI didn\u2019t do what they should have done\u201d in the inquiry, bluntly saying that \u201cthe FBI failed here.\u201d He said the jury did not have to \u201cfeel bad for the FBI agents\u201d and stressed that his special counsel team \u201cis not here to defend the FBI\u2019s handling\u201d of the dossier.<\/p>\n<p>The special counsel also offered up possible options on the FBI\u2019s botching of the Trump-Russia investigation, rhetorically asking if the FBI was \u201csimply incompetent,\u201d \u201cworking in coordination,\u201d \u201cor whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/judge-durham-danchenko-case-dismisses-false-statement-charge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JUDGE IN DURHAM-DANCHENKO CASE DISMISSES ONE OF FIVE FALSE STATEMENT CHARGES<\/a><\/p><source data-image-size=\"1060x600\" \/>From left to right: special counsel John Durham and Igor Danchenko.   (AP Photos)      <\/p>\n<p>The trial has revealed Danchenko was on the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fbi\">FBI&#8217;s<\/a> <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/fbi-steele-dossier-source-paid-informant-years-after-he-lied\">payroll as a confidential human source<\/a> from March 2017 to October 2020, before he was charged in November 2021 with <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/steeles-main-dossier-source-arrested-in-durham-investigation-report\">five counts of making false statements<\/a> to the bureau. He has <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/judge-rejects-danchenko-effort-classified-information-durham-trial\">pleaded not guilty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Durham, Danchenko anonymously sourced a fabricated claim about Trump 2016 campaign manager Paul Manafort to Charles Dolan, a Clinton ally who spent years, including 2016, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/pr-executive-1-identified-as-longtime-clinton-adviser-who-fed-falsehood-to-steele-source\">doing work for Russian businesses and the Russian government<\/a>. The judge <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/judge-durham-danchenko-case-dismisses-false-statement-charge\">threw out that charge<\/a> before the jury could decide on it.<\/p>\n<p>Durham&#8217;s indictment also says Danchenko lied to the FBI about a phone call he claims he received from someone he believed was Sergei Millian, a Belarus-born U.S. citizen and businessman the Steele source had said told him about a well-developed conspiracy of cooperation between then-candidate Donald Trump and the Russians, which <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/danchenko-durham-special-counsel-trump-dossier-christopher-steele-fbi\">the special counsel says is false<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The trial also revealed the Justice Department <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/fbi-immunity-agreement-steele-igor-danchenko-durham-trial\">provided Danchenko with partial immunity<\/a> in January 2017. The immunity arrangement called for \u201ccomplete and truthful testimony\u201d from Danchenko. The agreement indicated that \u201cyour client must answer all questions regarding the subject matter of this investigation and must not withhold information\u201d and that Danchenko was not supposed to \u201cfalsely implicate any person\u201d nor attempt to shield or protect anyone. Durham said the agreement was void if Danchenko lied, which the special counsel says he did.<\/p>\n<p>FBI supervisory intelligence analyst Brian Auten, who testified during the trial last week, was one of the FBI agents who interviewed Danchenko in January 2017.
