But in those circumstances I\u2019m the normal one,\u201d the actor Geena Davis says, in a new interview. \u201cEven in \u2018Stuart Little,\u2019 Hugh Laurie and I are very normal about having a mouse as a son.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rRCKNkn8oU\">https:\/\/t.co\/rRCKNkn8oU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The New Yorker (@NewYorker) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewYorker\/status\/1581689198503165953?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, right there, you\u2019re losing half of the awards, which might not be desirable,\u201d Davis explained. \u201cIn a perfect world where male and female actors got an equal number of roles, and equally interesting and complicated roles, then I could see doing that, but it\u2019s stacked against us from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like that\u2019s a little too soon,\u201d she added. \u201cI haven\u2019t really thought about it that much, but it\u2019ll be interesting to see if an equal number of times a woman wins as a man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Spirit Awards follows similar moves by the Grammys, Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys, who have all gone gender neutral, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/geena-davis-spirit-awards-gender-neutral-acting-categories-1235242528\/\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the Film Independent\u2019s Spirit Awards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmindependent.org\/press-releases\/film-independent-moves-to-gender-neutral-categories-and-increased-budget-caps-for-the-2023-spirit-awards\/\">announced<\/a> it would follow other awards shows and start honoring \u201cacting without reference\u201d to gender in its upcoming ceremony being held in March 2023, as previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/tv-film-award-ceremony-to-honor-acting-without-reference-to-gender-heres-what-they-will-now-be-called\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to join the other festivals and award shows that are already moving to celebrate great acting without reference to gender,\u201d Film Independent President Josh Welsh shared at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also happy to welcome non-binary performers into the Spirit Awards without forcing them to choose to identify as male or female,\u201d he added. \u201cAdditionally, it has been a long time since we substantially increased the budget limit for eligibility.
