But three medical professionals who work or have worked at VUMC, all speaking on the condition of anonymity, were skeptical the pause would become permanent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanderbilt is a liberal-led institution, and anytime anybody lets pressure off they\u2019ll continue to push these types of procedures,\u201d one source told The Daily Wire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt won\u2019t stop until it\u2019s banned by law in this state,\u201d a second source said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the footage shared by The Daily Wire\u2019s Matt Walsh of a VUMC doctor referring to irreversible transgender surgeries as \u201chuge money makers\u201d prompted the sources to come forward. Each source said they were extremely uncomfortable with transgender surgeries on minors being performed at the hospital, and that many of their colleagues were as well, but feared retaliation from the hospital if they were to speak up with their name.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of us\u2026aren\u2019t okay with what is happening,\u201d a third source said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement announcing the pause, VUMC said they\u2019ve performed double mastectomy surgeries on girls \u201cat least 16 years of age\u201d on \u201can average of 5 per year\u201d since their pediatric gender clinic\u2019s inception in 2018. But a source told The Daily Wire that they have first-hand knowledge that at least 10 minors have received double-mastectomies this year \u2014 double what VUMC says is their average.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire has not been able to independently confirm these figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>VUMC also recently released a statement saying its policies do \u201callow employees to decline to participate in care they find morally objectionable\u201d and do not allow for discrimination against them \u2014 a statement one of the sources took issue with.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was never asked,\u201d the medical professional said of the hospital\u2019s response. \u201cI was never offered an opt out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VUMC\u2019s gender-affirmation model aligns with the \u201cstandard of care\u201d deployed by pediatric gender clinics across the country. The standards <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/142\/4\/e20182162\/37381\/Ensuring-Comprehensive-Care-and-Support-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discourage<\/a> medical professionals from questioning a minor\u2019s self-reported transgender identity or exploring possible underlying factors that may be causing their dysphoria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>VUMC\u2019s pediatric gender clinic is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/google-removes-gender-clinic-map-citing-harassment-violation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds<\/a> that have opened up in North America in recent years to meet the growing demand of teens seeking gender-related procedures. A recent Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/usa-transyouth-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> found that between 2019-2021, at least 776 mastectomies were performed in the U.S. on patients ages 13 to 17 who identified as transgender, likely a \u201csignificant undercount\u201d since the review only examined insurance claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re creating a bigger problem by \u2018affirming\u2019 instead of treating the root of the problem: why someone feels gender dysphoric to begin with,\u201d a source said. \u201cI dont know of any other diagnosis where we affirm instead of treat. We don\u2019t affirm dementia patients of their belief that it\u2019s really the 1940s and we don\u2019t affirm schizophrenic patients of their belief that they\u2019re being spied on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to genital surgeries, such as vaginoplasty, which can be performed on 18-year-olds, the source expressed the opinion, \u201ccomplications seem to be the rule, not the exception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walsh also shared video of Vanderbilt health law expert Dr. Ellen Wright Clayton saying objections to gender surgery for religious or other reasons should have \u201cconsequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want you to take home that saying that you\u2019re not going to do something because of your religious beliefs is not without consequences and it should not be without consequences,\u201d Wright Clayton said at a 2019 lecture, titled, \u201cGender Confirmation Surgery: Anesthesia, Surgical and Ethical Considerations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t want to do this kind of work, don\u2019t work at Vanderbilt,\u201d Wright Clayton added.<\/p>\n<p>A source who attended the lecture told The Daily Wire they felt threatened when Wright Clayton said there should be consequences. Another source recalled, \u201cI just remember thinking, \u2018how dare you.\u2019 I\u2019ve done everything I should do and there\u2019s this woman up here telling me that if I disagree with this, that I should go somewhere else or get fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was shocking that nobody in the administration or in the department challenged that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The source said a lot of people complained about what happened. \u201cBut they complained anonymously because they\u2019re afraid of blowback,\u201d the source said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people uncomfortable with it. But if it makes a lot of money, they\u2019re going to go for it,\u201d the source opined. \u201cI applaud Matt Walsh and the team there.
