MMT, shorthand for <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/personal-finance\/modern-monetary-theory#:~:text=Modern%20Monetary%20Theory%20(MMT)%20is,Federal%20Reserve%20Bank%20of%20Richmond.\">Modern Monetary Theory<\/a>, is the elixir du jour, but it is actually an old potion with a slick new label.<\/p>\n<p><em><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/06\/business\/economy\/modern-monetary-theory-stephanie-kelton.html\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em> has noted,<\/p>\n[Stephanie Kelton] \u2026 is the most familiar public face of Modern Monetary Theory, which posits that if a government controls its own currency and needs money \u2014 to make sure its citizens have food and places to live when, say, a global pandemic pushes many out of work \u2014 it can just print it, as long as its economy has the ability to churn out the needed goods and services.<\/p>\n<p>There are other definitions of MMT including the following from <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/modern-monetary-theory-mmt-4588060\">Investopedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>The central idea of MMT is that governments with a\u00a0fiat currency\u00a0system under their control can and should print (or create with a few keystrokes in today\u2019s digital age) as much money as they need to spend because they cannot go broke or be insolvent unless a political decision to do so is taken.<\/p>\n<p>One major assumption is that the monetary authorities can keep price <a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/how-inflation-drinks-your-milkshake\/\">inflation<\/a> under control:<\/p>\n<p>Under MMT, the risk of inflation is considered minimal as governments that fully control their fiat currencies are believed to be able to control price levels, provided they can meet consumer demand.<\/p>\n<p>Now, with the annual change in the Consumer Price Index at 40-year highs, this assumption has <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/verdict-is-in-on-modern-monetary-theory-strategist-says-194714165.html\">tripped on a landmine<\/a>. To the proponents of MMT, however, this is a minor flesh wound. Kelton, for one, is undaunted, even though she\u2019s skeptical of the current monetary remedy:<\/p>\n[F]ar too many people remain convinced that <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StephanieKelton\/status\/1540772573516075008\">conventional monetary [theory] is the best weapon against inflation<\/a>. Perhaps we\u2019ll get lucky and inflation will trend steadily down before the\u00a0proactive efforts to rein it in tip the economy into recession. But, as I\u2019ve\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/stephaniekelton.substack.com\/p\/bidens-plan-to-fight-inflation\">written<\/a>\u00a0before, I wouldn\u2019t bet on it. I think we need\u00a0a different approach.<\/p>\n<p>Kelton has a plan, however, which she shared on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/stephaniekelton.substack.com\/p\/catch-me-on-the-mehdi-hasan-show\">The Lens<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>We\u2026 need to make (long-overdue) investments in renewable energy to diversify our energy portfolio\u2014<strong>but this time \u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0 into other forms of fossil fuel<\/strong>\u2014with the ultimate goal of weening ourselves entirely off of carbon-intensive sources of energy for the sake of civilization. Amping up supply in the near term and remaining wedded to oil going forward will only leave us vulnerable to future oil price shocks, not to mention the devastating impacts of climate change. <strong>Action on climate is action on inflation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While in tune with progressive talking points, such thinking is pure fantasy, as Alex Epstein, author of <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3VkjrVc\">Fossil Future<\/a><\/em>, explains:<\/p>\n<p>By our standards, the world is extremely poor, including energy poor\u2026 [T]here are six billion people in the world who by our standards use a totally inadequate amount of energy, less electricity than one of our refrigerators uses.
