That makes it an existential threat not just to the MTA, but to the entire city. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Nicole Gelinas <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nicolegelinas\/status\/1579492312144834560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">points out<\/a>, \u201cPublic safety is the #1 basis for a public-transit system and thus for a dense city. The key is \u2018public.\u2019 You are riding with strangers. You have to be sure they won\u2019t stab you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other words, without a subway, there is no New York. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/10\/a-dozen-bloody-attacks-on-nyc-transit-system-in-two-weeks\/\">And without an end to the killing, there soon will be no subway<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Queens Councilwoman Tiffany Cab\u00e1n\u2019s insistence that such violence is \u201ca one-in-a-million event\u201d is all too typical of how lefty pols are in full denial mode. They don\u2019t want to admit the crisis because they want to stay on the ever-softer-on-crime \u201creform\u201d drive that\u2019s behind it. (Just as with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/11\/cnn-commentator-errol-louis-appears-to-mock-concerns-about-rising-nyc-subway-crime\/\">wider progressive effort<\/a> to pretend away the <em>nationwide<\/em> crime rise.)<\/p>\n<p>Seven murders so far this year. Eight last year. Six in 2020.<strong> <\/strong>Before 2019, that grim number was never higher than two. That\u2019s an increase at a scale and speed not seen in <em>any<\/em> other category of violence across the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How much more proof do the pols need that criminal-justice \u201creform\u201d (from winking at fare-beating to the no-bail law and beyond) is a disaster?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More, these numbers come amid seriously decreased ridership \u2014 down to 81 million per month from the pre-pandemic 142 million. So every ride is significantly more dangerous for every rider, even though overall subway crime is down slightly from 2019:<strong> <\/strong>Straphangers are more than 53% more likely to be victims in 2022 than in 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The recent spate of murders on trains and in stations, including the utterly preventable death of Tommy Bailey<strong> <\/strong>at the hands of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/06\/an-nyc-subway-murder-foretold-and-ignored-by-callous-albany\/\">an alleged killer who was let free after a <em>non<\/em>-fatal subway stabbing last year<\/a>, reveal the full human cost of New York\u2019s disastrous policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams is doing his level best to fight the bad city trend on crime: He\u2019s managed to drive the overall murder rate down more than 14% this year.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But his NYPD has made a few major missteps on the issue, including a fumbled rollout of a subway safety push as well as Tuesday\u2019s bizarre<em> one-stop <\/em>system \u201ctour\u201d by NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell and Transit Chief Jason Wilcox. <\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/02\/as-subway-horrors-continue-adams-must-push-hochul-to-act-on-crime\/\">without movement from Albany, it\u2019s a near-impossible effort<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve written, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/09\/no-gov-hochul-tommy-baileys-death-and-those-of-countless-others-are-your-fault\/\">Gov. Kathy Hochul owns Tommy Bailey\u2019s murder<\/a> and countless others. She made a few meaningless tweaks to the catch-and-release rules driving crime and now pretends all is well while citing cherry-picked stats and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/04\/gov-hochul-says-new-york-bail-law-changes-off-table-till-after-election\/\">punting the possibility of <em>any <\/em>further changes until after November\u2019s election<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plus, growing ridership itself deters crime, so Hochul\u2019s inaction feeds a vicious cycle: More crime means fewer riders, which means more crime; rinse and repeat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s future is at dire risk until our crime-enabling leaders<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York\u2019s subway killings have reached a terrible, 25-year high, with the number of killings in the past two years eclipsing the total for the previous 11.
