He was 72.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> Coltrane featured in every \u201cHarry Potter\u201d movie, from \u201cSorcerer\u2019s Stone\u201d in 2001 to \u201cDeath Hallows -Part 2\u201d in 2011, and was much beloved for bringing the character from J.K. Rowling\u2019s book series to life. He was among one of the first characters to appear on screen, and he recited the famous line, \u201cYer a wizard, Harry,\u201d to a young Daniel Radcliffe as he embarked on his journey into the wizarding world. A towering figure but a softie at heart, Hagrid had a sweet spot for ferocious beasts and cared for some of the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d world\u2019s most ferocious, and iconic, creatures. Radcliffe<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/daniel-radcliffe-honors-hagrid-robbie-coltrane-death-1235403926\/\"> paid tribute to his time spent with Coltrane on the \u201cPotter\u201d set<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on \u2018Prisoner of Azkaban,&#8217;\u201d Radcliffe said. \u201cWhen we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid\u2019s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> The Scottish actor, comedian and writer also appeared in two James Bond films, 1995\u2019s \u201cGoldenEye\u201d and 1999\u2019s \u201cThe World Is Not Enough,\u201d as the Russian mafia man Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> One of his first major appearances was on the British sketch comedy series \u201cAlfresco\u201d in 1983. He co-starred with other soon-to-be greats like Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry. A few years later, he reunited with Thompson on the 1987 BBC Scotland drama \u201cTutti Frutti\u201d and earned his first best actor nomination from the British Academy Television Awards. From 1993-1995, he starred in the ITV crime drama \u201cCracker\u201d as criminal psychologist Dr. Edward \u201cFitz\u201d Fitzgerald, winning three British Academy Television awards. After hanging up Hagrid\u2019s moleskin coat, Coltrane starred in the acclaimed Channel 4 drama \u201cNational Treasure,\u201d playing a retired comedian who becomes accused of sexual assault. For the role, he won a handful of best actor awards from British orgs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> His long-time agent, Belinda Wright, reminisced about their work together. \u201cHe will probably be best remembered for decades to come as Hagrid in the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 films, a role which brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world prompting a stream of fan letters every week for over 20 years,\u201d Wright wrote via email to <em>Variety<\/em>. \u201cFor me, personally, I shall remember him as an\u00a0abidingly\u00a0loyal client. As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty, and after 40 years of being proud to be to called his Agent, I shall miss him.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> Coltrane is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell.
