Last month, in a campaign<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishjournal.com\/commentary\/opinion\/351854\/berkeley-develops-jewish-free-zones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> initiated by Law Students for Justice in Palestine (LSJP) at Berkeley Law<\/a> at the University of California Berkeley, nine progressive law groups amended their collective bylaws to exclude <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishjournal.com\/news\/351239\/berkeley-law-student-groups-pass-bylaw-pledging-to-not-invite-pro-israel-speakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speakers that support \u201cZionism, the apartheid state of Israel, and the occupation of Palestine.\u201d<\/a> The LSJP claimed it as a win for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel.<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishjournal.com\/commentary\/opinion\/351854\/berkeley-develops-jewish-free-zones\/\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Woke ideologues have decided that campus freedom of speech is only for those who agree with them without the possibility for debate. And this particularly impacts Jews \u2014 particularly those who are Zionist. How has this happened? Like so much of left-think, this campus debate is pitting the \u201coppressed\u201d vs. \u201coppressors.\u201d In this case, \u201coppressed\u201d Palestinians who must be advocated for and kept safe from their pro-Israel \u201coppressors.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/university-california-berkeley.jpg\"><\/a>The anti-Israel rhetoric at Berkeley Law has created a hostile (and even dangerous) environment for Jews holding Zionist beliefs. Bloomberg via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p>Along the way, pro-Palestinian groups like LSJP have the right to share their views, but pro-Zionist groups \u2013 not so much. And this leaves many Jewish students unable to defend themselves against increasingly hostile campus attacks.<\/p>\n<p>David L. Bernstein, founder and CEO of the Jewish Institute for Liberal Values (JILV), and author of the new book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/1637587678\/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=woke+antisemitism&#038;qid=1665782786&#038;sprefix=woke+an%2Caps%2C151&#038;sr=8-4&#038;tag=nypost-20&#038;asc_refurl=https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/15\/college-leftists-campaign-to-silence-all-talk-of-zionism-israel\/&#038;asc_source=web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woke Antisemitism: How Progressive Ideology Harms Jews<\/a>\u201d has studied the ways modern anti-Semitism has been rebranded as anti-Zionism \u2014 including on college campuses. \u201cOppressor v. Oppressed is always the default orientation of the woke left, whose ideologies equate power with depravity, and powerlessness with virtue,\u201d writes Bernstein. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/woke-antisemitism.jpg\"><\/a>David L. Bernstein is the author of \u201cWoke Antisemitism: How Progressive Ideology Harms Jews.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This ideology \u201chas become so pernicious and so widespread that mainstream Jewish leaders have little chance to move the needle on progressive attitudes to Jews and Israel,\u201d Bernstein adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this being the left, race has also been added into the mix. By classifying Jews as \u201cwhite\u201d oppressors, Bernstein argues, progressives seek to erase the history of discrimination and anti-Semitism Jews have endured for centuries. And this effort is clearly working. In a national poll commissioned by Bernstein\u2019s JILV of likely voters<a href=\"https:\/\/jilv.org\/poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> released this week<\/a>, nearly half (45%) view Israel as an \u201coccupier\/colonizer\u201d and 47 percent believe Israel has too much power.<\/p>\n<p>The exile of Zionism from campus life is hardly limited to Berkeley Law. In August, <a href=\"http:\/\/jewishoncampus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jewish on Campus<\/a>, a national pro-Jewish student-led organization along with the Brandeis Center for Human Rights, filed a civil rights complaint after Jewish students were kicked out of a rape survivor support group <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/18\/jewish-students-accuse-suny-new-paltz-of-discrimination\/\">at SUNY New Paltz<\/a> because of their Zionist beliefs.More recently, a University of Vermont teaching assistant proudly posted on social media that she would be lowering the grades of \u201cZionist students.\u201d The US Department of Education\u2019s Office of Civil Rights <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/religion-education-race-and-ethnicity-racial-injustice-vermont-a871c17adea961471d16f1789ea3a2b5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has since opened an investigation<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/religion-education-race-and-ethnicity-racial-injustice-vermont-a871c17adea961471d16f1789ea3a2b5\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/suny-new-paltz.jpg\"><\/a>The removal of Jewish students from a rape-survivor<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On college campuses across the nation, progressive activists have accelerated their efforts to silence and ban any talk of Zionism.
