Buttigieg\u2019s comments come on the heels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/economic-contraction-again-confirmed-for-second-quarter-solidifying-technical-recession\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two-quarters of negative economic growth<\/a>, which meets the rule-of-thumb definition of a recession, combined with crushing inflation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/inflation-surpasses-forecasts-ahead-of-midterm-elections-in-bad-omen-for-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rose 8.2% from September 2021 to September 2022<\/a>, surpassing analysts\u2019 forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg downplayed the threat of recession on ABC\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/recession-inevitable-buttigieg-touts-supply-chain-focus\/story?id=91553539&#038;cid=social_twitter_tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This Week<\/a>\u201d first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fnmMv geuMB alqtB wqIGQ\">\u201cLook, it\u2019s possible, but not inevitable,\u201d he said. \u201c[P]art of why we do see a lot of pressure on prices is that while demand has come back, Americans have more income because Americans have jobs in this almost historically low level of unemployment, it\u2019s been hard for the supply side to keep up,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fnmMv geuMB alqtB wqIGQ\">Then on CBS\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/buttigieg-calls-employment-numbers-strong-as-hell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Face the Nation<\/a>,\u201d he was asked to clarify conflicting remarks that President Joe Biden made last week about a possible recession. \u201cWhat exactly is the forecast?\u201d host Margaret Brennan inquired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, look, I mean, forecasting is by its nature, something that is a little bit uncertain,\u201d Buttigieg replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s political spin,\u201d Brennan cut in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, look, I- I don\u2019t think anybody could argue that, for example, our unemployment numbers are anything but strong as hell, they\u2019re under 4%,\u201d Buttigieg responded. \u201cThat almost never happens. We\u2019re at or near the definition of full employment. We also don\u2019t have any illusions about the challenges that Americans face with prices,\u201d he added before shifting the blame to Republicans who didn\u2019t vote for Democratic priorities in the Inflation Reduction Act or the government funding bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are squarely focused on making it easier for Americans to get by on their income,\u201d said Buttigieg.<\/p>\n<p>The Transportation Secretary\u2019s remarks follow similarly conflicting comments made by his boss. During a recent interview with CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-shaky-recession-prediction-no-i-dont-think-so-maybe-a-slight-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a> shot down fears of a recession, saying that if one comes, it would be a minor one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery six months they say this,\u201d Biden said. \u201cThere is no guarantee that there\u2019s going to be a recession, I don\u2019t think there will be a recession, if there is it will be a very slight recession, that is we\u2019ll move down slightly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But while speaking to reporters Saturday, Biden shot down the possibility of a recession flat out, claiming that the U.S. economy was strong and that other countries were facing more significant hardship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur economy is strong as hell,\u201d Biden claimed. \u201cInflation is worldwide, it\u2019s worse off everywhere else than it is in the United States.
