According to Deputy District Attorney Marlene Martinez, the woman later told Gibson about the incident during a massage, and Gibson\u2019s testimony would help buttress her allegation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> Judge Lisa B. Lench allowed prosecutors to call Gibson to the stand. She also denied a defense request that they be allowed to ask Gibson about racist and antisemitic statements he has made over the years. But the defense will be allowed to ask whether Gibson holds a grudge against Weinstein. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> The defense argued that Gibson has ill will toward Weinstein dating from the release of \u201cPassion of the Christ,\u201d which was widely seen to play on antisemitic themes. Weinstein later published a book, \u201cPerspectives on the Passion of the Christ,\u201d that challenged the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> \u201cThis created a feud between Mr.\u00a0Gibson\u00a0and Mr. Weinstein,\u201d argued Mark Werksman, Weinstein\u2019s attorney. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> When Werksman inaccurately claimed that the film won an Oscar for best picture, Weinstein gestured no with his arms with a look of disdain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> Werksman also argued that Gibson is \u201cnow trying to rehabilitate his image by becoming a champion of the #MeToo movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> According to the attorneys, Gibson told investigators that Jane Doe 3 had a \u201cPTSD reaction\u201d when he brought up the name \u201cHarvey\u201d during a massage. Gibson was talking about Weinstein in the context of a business deal. The woman stopped the massage, started crying and \u201cgave the idea that Weinstein sexually assaulted or groped her,\u201d Werksman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> Werksman argued that he should be allowed to confront Gibson about his antisemitic tirade that followed his 2006 arrest, as well as an antisemitic comment he allegedly once made to Winona Ryder and other racist statements. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> \u201cHow is it relevant if he\u2019s racist toward African Americans or Latinos?\u201d\u00a0Lench asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> \u201cIt goes to his unwillingness to grant equal status to someone who is not of his ilk. He has a white-supremacist view,\u201d Werksman responded. \u201cSomeone with white-supremacist values might have no problem perjuring himself against a Jewish defendant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> Lench ultimately permitted the defense\u00a0to ask Gibson about any animosity toward Weinstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> \u201cI\u2019m not going to allow you to get into his other comments that may indicate his general demeanor about, as you say, \u2018people who are not of his ilk,&#8217;\u201d she said. \u201cI will allow you to question him about whether or not there is personal animosity between the two of them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> The judge later allowed the defense to state the name of a book, \u201cNaked Massage,\u201d that Jane Doe 3 was trying to publish with Weinstein\u2019s help. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m\"> The court spent the first half of the day discussing Jane Doe 1,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mel Gibson can be called to testify against Harvey Weinstein at the producer\u2019s upcoming Los Angeles rape trial, a judge ruled on Friday.
