The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has had to take swift measures, saying it would construct a sediment construction to keep additional salt water from going up the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIn Plaquemines Parish, there\u2019s many freshwater intakes for municipal, industrial uses and the salt water can cause corrosion to pipes and can cause a change in the taste of the water for municipal use, so we try to, that\u2019s why we\u2019re involved to mitigate that,\u201d David Ramirez, chief of the River Engineering Branch of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox8live.com\/2022\/09\/28\/saltwater-gulf-impacts-plaquemines-parishs-water-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Fox 8 News last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Low rainfall in the Ohio River Valley and the Upper Mississippi are apparently leading to the low levels and stopping commercial movement and river cruises at multiple locations below Illinois, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mississippi-river-approaching-record-low-water-levels-threatening-commercial-traffic-11665748981?mod=flipboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. The costs to send materials have also gone up more than twice their amount in a span of weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">George Flaggs, the mayor of Vicksburg, Mississippi, hasn\u2019t seen the river this low in nearly 70 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely having an impact on the local economy, because the commercial use of this river\u00a0has almost completely stopped,\u201d Flaggs recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wapt.com\/article\/mississippi-river-dangerously-low\/41574996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> WAPT-TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As the National Park Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/miss\/riverfacts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>, the Mississippi River is a major part of the economy in the upper Midwest of the United States. Barges and tows ship around 175 million tons of cargo every year on the upper part of the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAmerica is going to shut down if we shut down,\u201d Mike Ellis, chief executive of American Commercial Barge Line LLC, said, per the Journal. The Corps\u2019 Mississippi Valley Division\u2019s spokeswoman, Lisa Parker, said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has even been scooping out parts of the river to make it lower for commercial ships to start passing through again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhen the water gets low enough, commerce starts to slow. Commerce is restricted and it turns into an extremely difficult environment to operate,\u201d Austin Golding, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/oct\/14\/mississippi-river-boats-barges-water-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">president<\/a> of Golding Barge Line, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wapt.com\/article\/mississippi-river-dangerously-low\/41574996#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> WAPT. \u201cThis will actually affect us in a very negative way. We have to have less cargo on our barges and less tonnage moving.
