Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Amazon-scaled-1.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.0.3\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Internet mega-retailer Amazon appears to have quietly updated an internal rule, <a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/nation\/technology\/prior-removing-transgender-critical-book-amazon-changed-policies-ban-books-hate?utm_medium=social_media&#038;utm_source=twitter_social_icon&#038;utm_campaign=social_icons\">Just the News reports<\/a>, eliminating an exemption for books and periodicals from its site-wide policy against selling items that contain or promote \u201chate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rule change might have gone unnoticed except that a conservative author posted on social media that Amazon had ended its own sales of his book on transgenderism and barred third parties from selling the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometime before this week, when it removed from its digital shelves a book critical of transgender ideology, Amazon altered its content policy to explicitly forbid books that promote \u2018hate speech,\u2019 a major rule change that could be used to rationalize action against a broader range of books sold by the digital retail giant,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/nation\/technology\/prior-removing-transgender-critical-book-amazon-changed-policies-ban-books-hate?utm_medium=social_media&#038;utm_source=twitter_social_icon&#038;utm_campaign=social_icons\">Just the News noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon this week yanked \u2018When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Movement\u2019 from its main web store, its Kindle servers, and its audiobook lineup with no explanation, even as the book had been available on the site for three years with no apparent controversy,\u201d the outlet added.<\/p>\n<p>The policy, under which \u201cWhen Harry Became Sally\u201d was booted, now reads, \u201cWe don\u2019t sell certain content including content that we determine is hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/amazon-created-new-hate-speech-policy-before-banning-bestselling-book-on-transgenderism\/\">Washington Free Beacon also reported<\/a> that the rule change appears inconsistent across Amazon\u2019s seller guidelines, suggesting that the change was recent and that Amazon has yet to bring the full site into compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company\u2019s content guidelines previously contained no mention of hate speech,\u201d the Free Beacon noted. \u201cIn an apparent contradiction, Amazon\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/external\/200164670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/external\/200164670&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1614276052580000&#038;usg=AFQjCNHFwIUkYRDtNBR2fuC_abcIAyzKCQ\">Seller Central<\/a>\u2018 page on \u2018offensive and controversial materials\u2019 currently exempts books from bans on other products that \u2018promote hatred.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amazon has long since banned products that feature elements of \u201chate speech,\u201d have even a tangential relation to \u201chate groups,\u201d or which \u201cpromote hatred.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>It also bans third-party retailers who use Amazon\u2019s platform to sell their wares from selling items that feature or are associated with \u201chate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Books and other publications, though, were exempted from the ban, and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200810150659\/https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/customer\/display.html?ie=UTF8&#038;nodeId=15015801\">Internet archives show<\/a> that as recently as August of last year, Amazon\u2019s book content policy did not include any mention of \u2018hate speech.\u201d per Just the News. \u201cAt that time, the company stated only that \u2018we reserve the right not to sell certain content, such as pornography or other inappropriate content.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A further inquiry, into older versions of Amazon\u2019s policy, seemed to show that it, at one time, included a provision against items that \u201cincite, promote, or glorify hatred,\u201d but Just the News added that that version of the rule \u201cexplicitly noted that the policy did not apply to books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/amazon-created-new-hate-speech-policy-before-banning-bestselling-book-on-transgenderism\/\">Free Beacon said that while Ryan T. Anderson<\/a>, who wrote \u201cWhen Harry Became Sally\u201d received no explanation for why his book was pulled, Amazon does now seem to say it \u201cmoderates\u201d its book content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon says it moderates book content using \u2018a combination of machine learning, automation, and dedicated teams of human reviewers. We\u2019ll remove content that does not adhere to these guidelines and promptly investigate any book when notified of potential noncompliance.
