But the Florida jury rejected the much-anticipated death sentence rather than receiving the majority vote for the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Benjamin Thomas, the jury foreman, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/live-updates\/nikolas-cruz-trial-day-2-jury-deliberations\/#post-update-7daacb90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS Miami<\/a> that one juror refused to vote in favor of executing the gunman because she believed he had some form of mental illness. Her belief may have been why two more jurors ultimately voted with her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere was one with a hard no \u2014 she couldn\u2019t do it \u2014 and there was another two that ended up voting the same way,\u201d Thomas said, adding that the verdict to put the shooter in prison for life without parole disappointed him, but he respected the other jurors\u2019 choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite his dissatisfaction with the vote, Thomas said, \u201cthat\u2019s how the jury system works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cEverybody gets their vote \u2014 everybody gets to decide,\u201d he said. \u201cWe went through all the evidence, and some of the jurors just felt that was the appropriate sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to Thomas, the jury concluded their decision on Wednesday, but some wanted to take the night to sleep on it before returning to court the following day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If a juror has made up their mind and they will only vote one way, \u201cthere\u2019s nothing else you can do, so we voted and moved on,\u201d he said, adding that he felt bad for the victims\u2019 families as the decision hurt many of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is insane. Everyone knows, right?\u201d Chen Wang, 14-year-old shooting victim Peter Wang\u2019s cousin, yelled during a news conference after the decision was read, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/parkland-shooter-jury-recommendation-live-updates-15c5121be1b8b7a73b85607d602e6ba2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cWe need justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lori Alhadeff, the mother of 14-year-old Alyssa, who was killed on that dreadful day four years ago, said the victims\u2019 relatives are \u201cbeyond disappointed with the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis should have been the death penalty \u2014 100%,\u201d Alhadeff said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/parkland-shooter-jury-recommendation-live-updates-15c5121be1b8b7a73b85607d602e6ba2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press.<\/a> \u201cI sent my daughter to school, and she was shot eight times. I cannot understand. I just don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The jury, composed of seven men and five women, had to be unanimous to impose the death penalty. Otherwise, the shooter would receive a life sentence for his crimes, which prosecutors described during closing arguments as entailing \u201csystematic massacre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Defense attorneys for the shooter argued that his mother drank during pregnancy, causing the shooter to have fetal alcohol syndrome that went undetected throughout his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Deliberations began on Wednesday following the conclusion of a three-month trial.
