Yet mere hours after he received word that the photographer who took the viral photos never saw any whipping, Mayorkas peddled the lie at a White House press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Emails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/mayorkas-alerted-haitian-migrants-whipped-hours-wh-press-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtained by the Heritage Foundation<\/a> via a Freedom of Information Act request show that assistant secretary of DHS public affairs Marsha Espinosa <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillFOXLA\/status\/1580187814687215616?s=20&#038;t=-NT-H-8581ENsAUkV5FChg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notified<\/a> Mayorkas and other top DHS officials about a local news interview debunking the viral \u201cwhipping\u201d lie on Sept. 24, 2021.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"945\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/melugin-945x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-281110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/melugin-945x1024.png 945w, https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/melugin-277x300.png 277w, https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/melugin-768x833.png 768w, https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/melugin.png 1190w\"><\/figure>\n<p>In the body of her email to Mayorkas, Espinosa highlighted comments from Las Cruces, New Mexico photographer Paul Ratje who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktsm.com\/local\/el-paso-news\/photographer-behind-controversial-photos-speaks-exclusively-to-ktsm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a> that, while photographing the mounted Border Patrol agents, he never saw officials use their leather reins to whip anyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen them whip anyone,\u201d Ratje said. \u201cHe was swinging it, but it can be misconstrued when you\u2019re looking at the picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just a few hours after receiving the email containing this key information that undermined the false narrative, Mayorkas gave a speech at the White House seemingly confirming the whipping lies and condemning Border Patrol agents. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur nation saw horrifying images that do not reflect who we are. We know that those images painfully conjured up the worst elements of our nation\u2019s ongoing battle against systemic racism,\u201d Mayorkas said.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed about the photographer\u2019s admission that no whipping had occurred, Mayorkas refused to acknowledge that he had seen or believed that report. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe horses have long reins, and the image in the photograph that we all saw, and that horrified the nation, raised serious questions about what \u2026 occurred, and as I stated quite clearly, it conjured up images of what has occurred in the past,\u201d Mayorkas said.<\/p>\n<p>When pictures and videos of Border Patrol agents in Del Rio, Texas, corralling several migrants who were trying to cross the water into the U.S first surfaced, Mayorkas originally joined Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/20\/dhs-chief-alejandro-mayorkas-pushes-back-on-haitian-migrant-abuse-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in denying<\/a>\u00a0the whipping claims. He went so far as to explain that the so-called whips were actually reins designed to keep the horses from trampling migrants.<\/p>\n<p>These images and clips, however, were then used by Democrats and the Biden regime to accuse the border law enforcement agents of using \u201cwhips\u201d to harm the illegal border crossers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was horrible to see. To see people treated like they did? Horses running them over? People being strapped? It\u2019s outrageous,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/09\/24\/biden-ramps-up-border-patrol-whipping-lie-its-outrageous-and-horrible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told reporters<\/a> from behind the presidential seal. \u201cI promise you, those people will pay. There will be an investigation underway now, and there will be consequences. There will be consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once the White House, Democrats, and the corporate media <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/11\/we-finally-have-a-guilty-verdict-in-the-migrant-whipping-story-but-it-isnt-border-patrol-its-the-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manufactured<\/a>\u00a0enough outrage about the whipping lies, however, Mayorkas changed his tune. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I was] horrified by what I saw,\u201d Mayorkas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/mayorkas-border-patrol-haitians\/2021\/09\/21\/fd1fd09e-1ad4-11ec-a99a-5fea2b2da34b_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a CNN interview. \u201cOne cannot weaponize a horse to aggressively attack a child. That is unacceptable. That is not what our policies and our training require. \u2026 Let me be quite clear: That is not acceptable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In July, nearly 10 months after corporate media and Democrat conspiracy theorists flooded front pages with the whipping narrative, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/document\/report\/cbp-office-professional-responsibility-del-rio-horse-patrol-unit-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Customs and Border Protection investigation<\/a>\u00a0found no evidence that the horseback unit used their reins to strike at the Haitians illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. In fact, the report acknowledged it was the media\u2019s outsized coverage that sparked an investigation in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of his incompetence and this revelation of dishonesty, Mayorkas faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/10\/06\/ted-cruz-alejandro-mayorkas-texas-mexico-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewed calls<\/a> for his impeachment amid what has become the nation\u2019s biggest border crisis in recorded history. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
