Just <a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2022\/10\/11\/whitmers-approval-ticks-up-in-michigan-ahead-of-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40 percent<\/a> of voters approve of Brown\u2019s performance, a drop from <a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2021\/11\/18\/phil-scott-approval-vermont-polling-senate-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">43 percent<\/a> in 2021. Brown\u2019s tenure has been marked by rising crime and a spike in deaths related to drug overdoses.<\/p>\n<p>The poll comes as Kotek seeks to distance herself from Brown, who has endorsed Kotek\u2019s campaign. Kotek served as Oregon House speaker for eight of Brown\u2019s years in the governor\u2019s office, during which time she voted for a controversial drug decriminalization bill Brown signed into law last year.<\/p>\n<p>Kotek has <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9CjcrXQGeZ8?t=264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized Brown for the law\u2019s implementation<\/a> but defended the measure in gubernatorial debates. In the most recent debate, Kotek pushed for a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/elections\/high-life-oregon-dem-governor-candidate-wants-safe-havens-for-meth-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meth stabilization center<\/a>&#8221; in Portland. The city&#8217;s first stabilization center closed in 2019 because its own staff said it wasn\u2019t properly treating addicts.<\/p>\n<p>Portland, Oregon\u2019s largest city, set an all-time high for homicides in 2021, and drug overdose deaths more than doubled in the state between 2019 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Kotek\u2019s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Kotek is polling neck and neck with Republican candidate Christine Drazan, who has taken a slight lead in the <a href=\"https:\/\/christinefororegon.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0693e18ac651cec38104bf462&amp;id=e900d3dadf&amp;e=6585001a97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EmersonPolling\/status\/1577388120097845248?s=20&amp;t=K5OKMNXdjSZf1Bh1nR_1mQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/christinefororegon.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0693e18ac651cec38104bf462&amp;id=2d5db7bc88&amp;e=6585001a97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/christinefororegon.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0693e18ac651cec38104bf462&amp;id=7dcdb4cc9f&amp;e=6585001a97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveys<\/a>. Betsy Johnson, an unaffiliated candidate, trails behind both by about 10 points.<\/p>\n<p>Drazan campaign communications director John Burke told the\u00a0Washington Free Beacon that Kotek &#8220;was Brown&#8217;s co-pilot during Oregon&#8217;s decade of decline.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Electing her would be nothing more than a third term of Brown&#8217;s failed agenda,&#8221; Burke said.<\/p>\n<p>Donors are spending big on the candidates as the race is set to be one of the most competitive this cycle.
