Doing that is very necessary, but it\u2019s not sufficient,\u201d he asserted. \u201cTo be a company that embodies trust, your mission and values should make it clear that you stand for more than just maximizing profit. That you stand up for social issues that are important, and you do the right things to help create a better world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PayPal garnered controversy in 2016 after the company opposed a North Carolina law that barred individuals from using washrooms for people of the opposite sex. \u201cI immediately made the decision that we were going to withdraw our plans to open an operations center there in a week,\u201d Schulman explained. \u201cBecause that was a clear assault against people for their gender identity and their sexual orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaying that you have values and not acting on them is worse than not having any values,\u201d Schulman explained. \u201cThat\u2019s what causes employees to revolt, that\u2019s how you sow distrust with customers or regulators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among other entities, the World Economic Forum is a leading proponent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/esg-the-invisible-fist-of-the-economy\">stakeholder capitalism<\/a>, an approach to investing that encourages executives to consider the needs of employees, communities, and other parties in addition to shareholders, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/get-woke-go-broke-amazon-installed-solar-panels-in-an-attempt-to-go-net-zero-they-kept-catching-fire-and-were-turned-off\">use of corporate power<\/a> to advance political agendas in the global economy. The philosophy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ben-shapiro-and-entrepreneur-vivek-ramaswamy-discuss-why-woke-investors-are-putting-the-toothpaste-back-in-the-tube\">drawn criticism<\/a> for shifting executives\u2019 gaze away from maximizing value for shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate involvement in contentious political and social issues likewise provokes skepticism among consumers and investors. PayPal trended on social media over the weekend as thousands of users expressed their disdain for the acceptable use policy and announced that they intended to cancel their accounts. The company\u2019s stock plummeted on Monday as the backlash appeared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-paypal-stock-plummets-after-daily-wire-report-exposes-shocking-misinformation-policy\">spook investors<\/a>, causing PayPal to lose over $6 billion in market value.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/poll-by-two-to-one-margin-investors-reject-woke-companies-pushing-political-causes\">exclusive poll<\/a> from The Daily Wire showed that American investors would prefer that companies commit solely to the pursuit of profits.
